USS LIBERTY

"Attack one American and you attack all Americans" was once proclaimed by President Clinton. More recently, an Assistant Secretary for State proclaimed that the U. S. government always protects its citizens. These are damned lies and meaningless words. These words were not true in 1967 (when Israel deliberately attacked the USS LIBERTY,) and unfortunately, and in spite of these beautiful words, they are not even true today. Moreover, there is no such thing as justice.

On that June day in 1967, the weather was beautiful... Clear and sunny, visibility unlimited... the LIBERTY, an elaborate state-of-the art intelligence gathering platform, was in international waters off the Gaza strip and was flying the Stars and Stripes. Israeli reconnaissance planes flew overhead for hours. Pilots and ship's crew waved to each other. Then, inexplicably, unmarked Israeli aircraft began attacking the ship.

The defenseless LIBERTY radioed for help. Two aircraft carriers in the Med responded by launching fighter aircraft. Unbelievably, they were recalled by the White House. RADM Geis, then commanding the carriers in the Sixth Fleet, called Washington personally to confirm the order. SecDef McNamara came on the line, then President Johnson. Johnson indicated to Geis that the aircraft were to be returned, that he would not have his allies embarrassed, and that he didn't care who was killed or what was done to the ship. Geis, like any good sailor, recalled the aircraft.

With no help forthcoming, the LIBERTY fell an easy victim to Israel's motor torpedo boat attack. FIVE torpedoes were lobbed at the Liberty, one hit amidships and instantly killed 25 sailors. A total of 34 died in the attack, 172 were injured.

President Johnson went on television and announced to the American people that TEN sailors were killed in the "six minute accidental" attack. Sailors were ordered not to discuss the incident with ANYONE under threat of court-martial. We waited for the investigation... and for the explanations and the answers. Why did Israel attack the ship? Why did the U. S. Government turn its back on the crew members? The answers never came.

There has NEVER been a congressional investigation. No congressman has the guts to even suggest such a thing. There has been a NAVY-controlled white-washed investigation of the crew's actions during the attack, but nothing else was covered. Even in this, evidence was changed, and officers and crew who knew the answers were not asked the right questions and were told to shut up when they offered information.

The attack has been a matter of controversy since 1967. Survivors and many key government officials including Secretary of State Dean Rusk and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Moorer say the attack was no accident. Two Israeli officers have come forward to admit that the attack was no accident. Yet the Israeli government and its supporters insist it was a "tragic case of misidentification" and charge that survivors and their eyewitness supporters are lying.

The ship's crew is bitter. It is bitter because its own country turned its back on them... it is bitter because someone killed 34 Americans and got away with it...what's more, that its own government covered up the truth and HELPED them get away with it!

"Ahhh," you say. "Anti-Semitism!" No. Many of the ship's crew are Jewish, and we have many Jewish friends. We are NOT anti-Semitic. We ARE anti-Israel. We know that Israel has controlled the American congress for years... to the point where 34 dead sailors can go un-investigated!

What is even worse, I am convinced that the same thing could happen TODAY! Yes, I do believe that Israel could deliberately attack another U.S. ship TODAY and get away with it again, just exactly like they did in 1967! Israel has bragged about its control of the American congress. And in May, 2002, congress passed a resolution supporting Israel no matter what. 356 members of congress signed on, only 21 opposed. It has been said that Israel could get any legislation passed through congress with a veto-proof margin. I believe it.

Lieutenant Commander Jim Ennes recalls message from Sixth Fleet Commander promising jet fighter support within ten minutes if needed.
Ennes describes pre-attack reconnaissance.
Ennes: Reconnaissance pilots were heard telling their headquarters that we were an American ship.
Ennes: Reconnaissance pilots circled the ship 13 times in the hours before the attack.

U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk says the decision to attack a known American ship was made at a high level in the Israeli government.
Meadors: The helicopters that Israel claims were sent for "rescue," actually carried armed men in battle dress .
U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Thomas Moorer says an accident is "too much to swallow. The ship was deliberately attacked."

Ennes: The attack did not stop immediately after the torpedo explosion as Israel claims.
Hrankowski: Israeli torpedomen fired on our liferafts in the water.
Ennes: Israel claims firing stopped as soon as the boats came close enough to identify the ship as American. Not so. They continued to fire from close range for another 40 minutes and fired upon liferafts in the water waiting for survivors.
Captain Tully: USS Saratoga launched rescue aircraft in ample time to drive away attacking torpedo boats. Orders from Washington directed the recall of those airplanes while Americans were dying. Tully has never been told why his aircraft wre recalled.
Survivor Rick Aimetti: Israeli helicopter hovering over obvious carnage asked, "Are there casualties."
Ennes: Court of Inquiry was not in accordance with Navy Regulations and reported findings unsupported by evidence and testimony.
Captain Tully: This is the only incident of its type not investigated by Congress.
Ennes: Israel has given at least six different versions of what happened, none of which agree with reports by eyewitness survivors.
Admiral Moorer: A mass grave at Arlington National Cemetery was misnamed as part of the effort to downplay this story.
Moorer: It was a deliberate attack in clear weather.
Rusk: The attack must have been authorized at a high level as it invovled several different Israeli commanders.
Ennes: Signalmen flashed our name and ID to attacking boats, but were ignored.

Ennes: A review by the Department of State found the Israeli excuse untrue. The report was classified Top Secret.
Fireman John Hrankowski: Liberty men were dispersed, were ordered not to talk about the attack, and were stripped of distinctive USS Liberty uniform markings.
Commander David Lewis: Even the settlements were covered up.
