British Scientist Puts Odds for Apocalypse at 50/50
Mon Jun 9,12:12 PM ET

By Deena Beasley

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - This is the way the world might end:

A genetically engineered pathogen is released, debris from an erupting "supervolcano" blocks the sun or scientists in the biggest "bioerror" of them all accidentally trigger a matter-squeezing "big bang."

The demise of civilization has been predicted since it began, but the odds of keeping Planet Earth alive and well are getting worse amid a breakneck pace of scientific advances, according to Martin Rees, Britain's honorary astronomer royal.

Rees calculates that the odds of an apocalyptic disaster striking Earth have risen to about 50 percent from 20 percent a hundred years ago.

The 60-year-old scientist, author of the recently published "Our Final Hour," says science is advancing in a far more unpredictable and potentially dangerous pattern than ever before.

He lists as mankind's biggest threats: nuclear terrorism, deadly engineered viruses, rogue man- made machines or AI and genetic engineering that could alter human character. All of those could result from innocent error or the action of a single malevolent individual.

By 2020, an instance of bioterror or bioerror will have killed a million people, Rees contends.

"There is a growing gap between doors that are open and doors that should be open," Rees, a professor at Britain's Cambridge University, said in a recent interview.

The cosmologist concedes that natural disasters have always loomed -- so-called supervolcanoes could explode at any time and asteroids could slam into the planet, causing massive climate changes -- but says the most frightening risks are probably man-made.

"A hundred years ago, the nuclear threat wasn't even predicted ... but that threat still hasn't gone away," he said.

The arms race, after all, was fueled by science, and the field has a responsibility to inform a wide public of the risks in deciding how to apply scientific breakthroughs, he added.

BIOTECHNOLOGY COULD CHANGE HUMAN NATURE

"For the first time ever, human nature itself isn't fixed. Biotech drugs and genetic engineering are empowering individuals more than ever before," Rees said.

With rapidly advancing DNA technology, "even a single person could cause a disaster," Rees warned, noting that the United States, after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and anthrax scare, is well aware of this threat.

Thousands of people have the ability to engineer viruses and bacteria to cause deadly plagues. Even if one such "weirdo" didn't kill many people, that type of biological terrorism would profoundly change daily life, the scientist warned.

Nanotechnology -- the subject of a recent Michael Crichton thriller about the havoc caused by runaway microscopic machines -- are also a potent threat, he said.

If the field advances far enough, rogue self-replicating nanotechnology machines -- feeding on organic material and spreading like pollen -- could devastate an entire continent within a few days, Rees said.

The dangers of global warming are also addressed in the book, subtitled "A scientist's warning: How terror, error, and environmental disaster threaten humankind's future in this century -- on Earth and beyond."

Rees does not discount the possibility of disaster caused by scientific experiments involving particle accelerators. "Perhaps a back hole could form, and then suck in everything around it," he cautions.

So what's to be done?

The British scientist calls for better regulation and inspection of sensitive data and experiments.

"We need to keep track of those who have potentially lethal knowledge," Rees said.

He also suggested better efforts to "reduce the number of people who feel excluded or otherwise motivated to cause harm."

More the reason not to stroke out about stupid issues .

Fear of apocolypse drives me (and I hope others) to experiance things I would be more fearful of.. like learning to fly!

I don't call concern about MAN-MADE black holes appearing that could destroy the planet in a flash due to meddling where we shouldn't a "stupid issue".

Only a lack of corncern is what I would call "stupid".

No.. More like, stupid things like believing in a chemtrail hoax, and dedicated enourmous amounts of time and energy into being an activist for said hoax.

People need to chill, even if there were (and there are not) 'chemtrails', nothing you can do about it anyway! Deal!

Yeah, but there is no issue, or solution to solving chemtrails, when it is a hoax.. There are solutions to ending the hoax, if the activists wern't (skull) and bone headed .

Concern does raise an issue and can bring a solution.. It's all about whether concern is nessisary- not saying we should all be carefree hippies.

I'm just jokin' around all day Mech.. chill out man. Life is not that bad.. neither is America.

Cptn-
While I still respect your right to opinion on the 'hoax', I have been in correspondence with someone who has seen some weird things falling from the sky on a couple what we chemmies would call heavy spray days, and black helicopters flying around to seemingly observe. In the few weeks we've been corresponding, this person seems as level-headed as anyone I've interacted with. How can you discount someone's, or others', similar experience like that? This person wasn't the only observer. You can't lump them into the 'crazy' bin, because there may come a day when you experience something completely outside the realm of daily human experience. Is your main reason for not acknowledging that something might be going on because you don't want some lunatic to take it in their own hands to do something about it, as you stated in another forum?
And I agree that we all need to "chill out" here.
Sorry about getting off topic here Mech. I read that same article the other day, and have been having gut feelings that something on the scale of what's described above might happen in my lifetime, and it keeps getting stronger. The alarm bells started going off when a Rand Corp. scientist last January went on the media and said that the government should not and will not warn the public on an upcoming planetary disaster, if one were to be discovered. Why the hell would he say that to the press? And does that have anything to do with the underground blasts coming from VP Cheney's residence at the Naval Observatory last sumer and fall? I'm sure it's already outfitted with bomb shelters, why does he need to go deeper? I agree with Cptn again on "not stroking out on stupid issues" (not you specifically Mech, just in general). Considering concepts like this really make you examine how you're living your life and what's truly important.

There are things that are unexplainable Graeme, expecially since we don't (thankfully) have a military that tells us *everything*.

I am the type of person who does not automatically assume something is wrong.

Falling substances? I don't know. I won't even speculate, same goes for the helicopters. Speculation keeps these theories alive.

If I saw some black helicopters, I'd probably say 'ooh, cool, helicopters'.

I gotta disagree with you: sometimes things like "falling substances" and black choppers coming in to observe the phenomena keep this theory alive. Out of the ordinary events with no normal explanation need speculation. But, what you're probably saying is speculation gets out of hand- and you're probably correct. You don't have to assume something is "wrong", you're probably a positive person by nature to not want to think that. Something might be going on, don't have to name it right or wrong because nobody can say for sure what, if anything, it is.
