It is nice to see our healthy form of paranoia is alive, well and flourishing
Here is a quote from the Orbit site....check out the 'animation' of the storm too.

quote:

Kent: What is going on with Mars? It is currently experiencing a global dust storm, the likes which have not been seen in several years http://tes.la.asu.edu/. However if you check out the MGS TES thermal imaging scans at 90 degrees, you will note what appears to be impacts, eruptions or explosions occurring in the lower hemisphere, marked by star patterns. Is this anomaly created by a fault in the MGS's thermal sensors, if so, why are they primarily clustered only in the lower 90 degree quadrant?

If these are the results of asteroid impacts, again why are they all clustered so tightly within one quadrant and not strung out around the planet, as was the case with the Shoemaker-Levi, Jupiter encounter. If it is a barrage of asteroid impacts, is Earth next? Could it be a series of huge volcanic eruptions? But why now, when Mars has been largely volcanically dormant for so long? Or... (reaching WAY out there) could it be part of an ongoing process to terraform Mars? The dust in the atmosphere helping to raise the planet's temperature significantly. Finally, there is a new Mars probe currently enroute to further explorer the red planet, which is due to enter Mars orbit this fall. Is this an attempt to block it's view? Possibly some of your sleuths can investigate further to find supporting or dismissive evidence for these questions and get to the bottom of this mystery. Regardless, I suggest everyone keep the eyes on Mars.

Wonderful pictures, amber! FYI, I edited your post to change the [pic] reference to a URL. Hope that's okay.

Us skeptics just gotta wonder if perhaps we are crashing rockets into mars for whatever sick reasons they may have... Wow! having just read about the Maser in another thread I would venture to guess we perhaps started this dust storm when we blew the face off the mars face that no longer looks like a face.

Martian Dust Storm
Credit: TES Team, MGS, JPL, NASA
Explanation: If you've been unhappy with the weather on Earth, check out Mars, now in the grip of a planet-wide dust storm. Above, observations from the orbiting Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft illustrate the storm's progress through July 21. The series of dated frames show measurements from the MGS Thermal Emission Spectrometer which can determine both temperature and amount of atmospheric dust. Dust data has been plotted on maps of the martian surface with blue representing relatively clear atmosphere and red colors indicating increasing concentrations of dust. In mid June, scientists first noticed the beginnings of the storm in Mars' southern hemisphere and have watched it grow to obscure most of the planet. Unfortunately for Mars-watchers, the timing of the storm has hidden the Red Planet's surface from view during its period of close approach to planet Earth.

Significant update on the Mars storm?

Mars Dust Storm Caused By Asteroid Hit?...08/03/01
by Mitch Battros (ECTV)

I just returned from the studio having just completed my interview with Dr. Tom VanFlandren. I'm still trying to catch my breath. What he had to say was astounding. You may remember the news of a "sudden dust storm on Mars" which was released July19th by NASA. Full Story: http://www.earthchangestv.com/secure/Breaking_News/July2001/0717planet.htm. NASA's statement: On June 26, 2001, the Hubble Space Telescope spotted a dust storm brewing in Hellas Basin on Mars. A day later the storm "exploded" and became a global event.
Dr. Tom VanFlandren's Bio: http://www.metaresearch.org/home/about%20meta%20research/vanflandern.asp

One of the more important facts is to understand Mar's atmosphere. It is about 1% as that of Earth. A one hundred mile an hour wind here on Earth, would equate to approximately 10 mph on Mars. This appears to challenge the notion of some sort of wind storm as first announced my Nasa officials. Dr. VanFlandren would suggest "what occurred on Mars has all the symptoms of an asteroid collision". For the first on 'live' TV, I was speechless.

Could it be the apparent increase in NEA's (near earth asteroids) had been related to what recently occurred on Mars? Did the bolide that streaked across the US east coast been part of the same cluster that may be related to the Mars incident? Dr. VanFlandren states "an asteroid that could destroy a large city hits about every century". The last one that hit was the "Tungusta" on the morning of June 30, 1908 at 7:17 AM. This would suggest we are due at anytime.

The good news is in the detection of NEA's. Tom VanFlandren states "our ability to track NEA's has gone from 10% 1998, to 30% today." Of course this still leaves an astounding 70% still undetected.

The possible Mars asteroid collision is a fast breaking story. I am expecting a lot of heat on this one. They tell me the closer to the source, the hotter the heat. This may take more time and concentration from my other work at the hospital and Red Cross. You can help by supporting ECTV through obtaining your subscription today. Here is another quote from Nasa emphasizing the gravity of the Mars dust storm. " (NASA scientist) feelings must have been mixed indeed when the first images arrived at mission control and revealed .... a world-wide haze. The surface of the entire planet was hidden by the biggest dust storm anyone had ever seen! Only Olympus Mons, a giant volcano 24 kilometers high, peeked above the clouds." http://www.earthchangestv.com/secure/Breaking_News/July2001/0717planet.htm

More on this breaking news item Saturday, August 4th . Today's "live" interview will be on our 'audio/video' page by Monday night. Audio/Video Page: http://www.earthchangestv.com/AudioCapture/index.htm
