KOKOMO, Ind. -- City leaders have narrowed to four the list of firms being considered to study a mysterious hum that dozens of residents say they can hear.
The city received 12 proposals from consultants and research groups interested in trying to identify the cause of the low-frequency noise, which some residents have complained about since 1999.
Officials decided Friday to ask Chicago-based Midwest Environmental Assistance Center and Cambridge, Mass.-based Acentech Inc. to present their ideas before the city's Board of Public Works and Safety in three weeks.
Board members also chose two other firms to make presentations if the board is not satisfied with proposals from its top choices.
Several proposals were removed from consideration because their projected costs exceeded the $100,000 officials have allocated for the study.
Board members and other city leaders said they are interested in the Midwest Environmental Assistance Center because of the firm's experience with noises.
"It was obvious they have been in the community," Howard County Health Department Administrator Kris Conyers said. "They've done their homework."
One of the other proposals submitted was from Hilliard, Ohio-based Campanella Associates, which was hired by former Kokomo resident Diane Anton to complete a study on the hum.
Campanella's 1999 study recorded low levels of low-frequency noise at Anton's home and other locations. The firm was not chosen to present its proposal.
