Kissinger sees silver lining in attacks

HAMDEN — Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger told a Quinnipiac University audience Wednesday the Sept. 11 attacks on America present "an opportunity" to create a new, peaceful world order.

"This tragedy may be recorded in history as a great turning point to a more constructive system," he said. "Whether that happens is largely up to us."
Kissinger was on campus to deliver the Quinnipiac Alumni Association presidential lecture and receive an award for his achievements in foreign policy.

He drew an overflow crowd of several hundred, and about a dozen protesters who criticized his Vietnam War actions under President Richard M. Nixon from 1969 to 1974.

But the majority were there to applaud and to listen to one of the major American political figures of the 1960s and 1970s.

Roger Agatston came to Hamden from Monroe early in the day to get a seat. He said Kissinger, now 78, is "fascinating," keenly analytical and can boast of such achievements as helping Nixon achieve détente with China.

But 10 students and a professor, all from Trinity College, came from Hartford to hold up posters saying Kissinger is "wanted — for crimes against humanity."

"The American people should know he is not the great statesman he's alleged to be," said Trinity Professor Fred Pfeil.

The protesters, who were upset by Kissinger's participation in American bombing of Laos and Cambodia as the Vietnamese conflict expanded, silently held up their signs during his speech in Alumni Hall. Police immediately ejected them.

When a reporter asked Kissinger about his Vietnam policies and other allegations during a news conference before the speech, Kissinger said, "Vietnam is something that happened 26 years ago…Those sloganeering phrases you use are based on books that have misrepresentations on every page."

Kissinger was genial and smiling during the session with reporters until he was asked to comment on the charge American policies abroad led to the Sept. 11 attacks.

"Nothing justifies the murder of thousands of people who went to work not knowing there was a 'foreign policy problem,'" he said angrily.

"Certainly, mistakes were made in our foreign policy," he added. "But nothing justifies this. If we accept that argument, we are opening the world to terrorism."

Having grown up in Nazi Germany, Kissinger said he had witnessed such devastation as befell New York City Sept. 11.

"This was a psychic shock to Americans," he said during a question-and-answer session after his speech. "But the way this country has come together is extraordinary."

Speaking of the Bush administration's response, Kissinger said, "I think we have developed a strategy that has been decisive."

Kissinger said he sees the terrorist attacks as "an opportunity" because "not since immediately after World War II has there been such fluidity and flexibility in shaping an international environment." He noted that even China and Japan are assisting America in its war against terrorism.

When a Quinnipiac professor asked about Attorney General John Ashcroft's detention of approximately 1,100 Middle Easterners living in America, Kissinger said, "I believe this is not a normal situation. The terrorists who came into this country melted into our society…then they emerge and strike.

"I have sympathy for our law enforcement people who say they can't wait for this. I give the (Bush) administration the benefit of the doubt."

Commenting on the current crisis between Israel and the Palestinians, Kissinger said the Palestinians have to accept the existence of the State of Israel if there is ever to be a resolution.

Kisinger said the Palestinians do have legitimate grievances but "they have to give up the idea of pushing Israel into the sea."

He also said, "They cannot conduct a strategy whose ultimate purpose is to collapse the State of Israel. When this decision (to change that attitude) is made, progress in negotiations will be possible."

They reneged on paying Viet Nam millions of dollars in war reparations for the release of American POW's. They paid just enough to get some of them released, so they could get the photo op of POW's being freed during the Nixon admininstration, then left the remaining POW's to rot in VN prisons!!

Harry Potter = 11

...coinciding with release of "Ocean's 11"?

Remember that Harry Potter has been heavily criticised by Christian groups as promoting witchcraft/satanism to kids.

Why the huge media blitz on the Harry Potter books, paraphernalia and movie since it came out? It costs a lot of money for all of those media blitz promotions. Who paid for it? Who else other than the obvious parties wants it to be so successful?

BTW, these 'media blitzes' are a form of mind control they call 'advertising'. They promote something over and over and over until it's stamped in your brain, so you remember it whether you want to or not. That's how they 'sell' you on some product or idea.

Few people ever question why some movies are promoted so much. They never consider the possiblity that the promoters have an agenda that only begins with the promotion of that movie or book. They will pay as much as necessary to make it part of "Americana" or the American psyche as they would like it to be.

It's like ratings or polls. They manipulate them anyway they want to convince a target audience that they too, should support or vote the way 'everyone' else does.
