I am pleased to announce that J.D. Abolins has just finished a section of
his Meyda Online web site dedicated to the latest move to institute a
national ID in the United States in the wake of the September 11 terrorist
attacks.
The main "No ID" page is http://www.meydaonline.com/liberty/nat_id/
The page about the AAMVA and their move to make the DLs into de facto
national ID cards is at: http://www.meydaonline.com/liberty/nat_id/aamva200201.htm
That page includes a couple of the recent ScanThisNews issues along with a
sample letter of objection to AAMVA's national ID scheme.
Now is the time to get involved! Send your comments and opinions, or us the
sample letter and send it in! Share this information with others. Don't
assume that because you know about what the AAMVA is doing others do as
well; most don't and won't unless you tell them!

[The following is a repeat from previous ScanThisNews post:]
On Monday, January 14, 2002, the American Association of Motor Vehicle
Administrators' Task Force on Identification Security is scheduled to
announce its recommendations for transforming state driver's licenses into
national IDs.
According to the AAMVA web site, the event will be "webcast" live at 10:30
a.m. eastern time and can be viewed over the Internet using RealPlayer G2
which can be downloaded here: http://www.connectlive.com/events/realplayerdownload
If enough people were to express their opposition to the DL-as-ID
scheme, the AAMVA might begin to understand that not all Americans are
prepared to so-quickly surrender liberty.
Perhaps an email message something like the following would be constructive:
---
Linda Lewis, AAMVA President and CEO
mailto:llewis@aamva.org
Dear Linda Lewis,
I am aware of the ongoing effort by the American Association of Motor
Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) to surreptitiously institute a de facto
national ID system in the United States. I personally am offended by your
work -- as President and CEO of that organization -- in furtherance of this
agenda.
I am aware that this agenda has been in the works for more than twenty years
as evidenced by the "Driver License Applicant Identification and Licensing
System Security" guidelines your organization drafted in conjunction with
the U.S. Department of Transportation in 1978/79.
The AAMVA is now shamelessly using the horrible terrorist attack of
September 11, 2001, as excuse and justification for an attack of a different
sort; one that in my opinion will be even more destructive and will last for
generations to come.
Your organization apparently believes that the way to counter attacks on
liberty and freedom is to implement a system of ID check-points across the
US. When in reality, such a system will only serve to obliterate all forms
of individual liberty.
Please be reminded that a "driver's license" is simply evidence of ones
demonstrated ability to drive a car! Nothing more. Generally, state
legislative bodies have ~not~ charged their motor vehicle agencies with
issuing identification documents, and have ~not~ made "identification" an
important part of their proof-of-driving-ability function. There is simply
never any need to do so, not as long as "driver's licenses" are used for
their intended purpose.
Conversely, your organization has worked feverishly for more than twenty
years, through various methods and approaches, trying to transform drive's
licenses into identification documents.
I am aware that the AAMVA serves as parent to AAMVAnet, Inc., which operates
the "charge-for-service" network developed to manage and exchange motor
vehicle records and information nationally and internationally. Clearly, the
AAMVA intends for its AAMVAnet system to be used in implementing and
carrying out the national ID scheme. AAMVA's national ID scheme will, of
course, create instant demand for your already-in-place services and will
increase your subscriber base exponentially. Obviously, your organization
intends to directly benefit financially should a "national ID" system be
established, and AAMVA's ultimate motive is obviously to create demand for
its "pay-for-usage" services. Your efforts, therefore, appear self-serving
and not at all in the best interest of the American people.
It further appears that the AAMVA is attempting to implement its own
self-serving agenda through administrative process, outside the
constitutional constraints of direct legislative review and public scrutiny.
Of course, as Chief Executive of the United States, it is President George
W. Bush and not the AAMVA who will ultimately determine whether a national
ID scheme is instituted using this administrative approach under his watch.
Nevertheless, I urge you as President and CEO of AAMVA to abandon your work
toward the subjugation of liberty, and return to focusing on issues of
driver competency.
