This was in my e-mail box this morning. Seems very hypocritical to me. WASHINGTON, DC—Seeking to "narrow the focus of the drug war to the true enemy," Congress passed a bill legalizing drug use for the gainfully employed Monday. "Stockbrokers, lawyers, English professors... you're not the problem here," said DEA Administrator Asa Hutchinson at a White House press conference. "If you are paying taxes and keeping your yard tidy, we're not going to hassle you if you come home from a hard day of work and want to enjoy a little pot or blow. But if, on the other hand, you're one of these lazy, shiftless types hanging out on the street all day looking for your next high, we're coming after you." The new law, which goes into effect May 1, will enable police departments and courts to focus on what Hutchinson called "the real drug offenders." http://www.theonion.com/onion3811/drugs_now_legal.html

The Onion is a satirical journal, sort of like the National Lampoon. It's a joke.Other "headlines" from the same issue include: "School Board Adopts Gay-Ass Uniform Policy" "E.T. Toys Forced On Uninterested Children" "Man Hopes Hot Woman In Next Apartment Can Hear How Well He's F***** His Girlfriend" "Man Bitten By Radioactive Sloth Does The Lying-Around-All-Day Of 10 Normal Men" "John Ashcroft Silences Reporters With Warning Shot" "Ozzy Osbourne Bites Head Off Five-Pound Chocolate Rabbit"

That's from the "John Ashcroft Silences Reporters With Warning Shot" story. Those reporters shouldn't be playing with homey, he don't mess around...

Thanks Duncan, I'm sure glad it's a joke. Wasn't aware the Onion was satirical.

Since French revolution satirical journals, as Onion is, are often means through which the governing structure or oposition (depending on the ownership) states that what they cannot do officially, to form the opinion of the public. This was posted on GUARDIAN (UK) newspaper site today, os it is not a joke this time: MPs back plans for radical new drug laws MPs back proposals for radical new drug laws Patrick Wintour Tuesday April 2, 2002 The Guardian The last political obstacle to the relaxation of Britain's cannabis laws will be cleared this month when the Commons home affairs select committee backs plans by the home secretary, David Blunkett, to downgrade the classification of the drug, the Guardian has learned. .... http://www.guardian.co.uk/uklatest/0,7721,362449,00.html I am wondering how long it will take before US goes the same way.
