After not much activity after MONDAYS onslaught, the boys in blue are back again. The weatherman said partly cloudy with cooling. He forgot to mention the long dripping lines connecting these "real clouds" together. They are coming from all directions.Wensday night I observed the following; 9:30 pm. sky clear no traffic. A large military jet flys over at LOW altitude leaving a broken or dash type trail. This guy is flying low and slow with not one light showing. Nada. Not one strobe or any other form of light. AND THE RESIDENT EXPERT SAYS THEY HAVE TO FOLLOW ALL OF THE FAA REGS. Yeah right. Rest well tonight, your Airfarce in on duty.

David-From "THE RESIDENT EXPERT:" Yes, we DO have to follow FAA regulations. No, this doesn't mean that we have to have our lights on all of the time. I fly a lot with night vision goggles (NVGs) and on some of our sorties we do what's called "unplugging" which means that all of our external lights are turned off. We can do this in Restricted areas and in some other military airspace. Also, we fly with what's called "covert" lighting. Basically, it's lighting that is only visible by looking through NVGs. I've been out on sorties and flown back to the airfield and landed without switching from "covert" back to "normal" lighting. It was not quite in harmony with the rules, but I'm not perfect, either. Hey, it happens every once in a while. Keep in mind, though, that I fly with a radar and I can keep clear of other traffic. I'm curious as to what type of aircraft you saw flying low overhead on this evening. With it putting out dashed trails, surely you saw what type it was. Did it have it's landing gear down? Do you live underneath an approach corridoor to an air base? Well, I hope that this helps. Mav

The basic airframe configuration was that of a 707. Could have been an RC 135 but I don't think so, seemed larger. Landing gear in the up position. I do not believe that this is an approach area, if it was we would see low flying aircraft more often. Nearest bases are Sacramento and Travis. It caught my attention that this plane was too low to have no lighting at all. We do have a small very active airport here. His approx heading was N/S. Time about 9:30 p.m. If I was to guess the altitude it would have to be in the 10-12000 ft. range. He was going slow, not in a hurry. As for the broken trail, well you know how I feel about that. It did help and thanks.
