Stages of the May 15-16, 2003 Lunar Eclipse

STAGE 1

Moon enters penumbra

The shadow cone of the Earth has two parts: a dark, inner umbra, surrounding by a lighter penumbra. The penumbra is the pale outer portion of the Earth's shadow. Although the eclipse begins officially at this moment, this is in essence an academic event.

You won't see anything unusual happening to the Moon -- at least not just yet. The Earth's penumbral shadow is so faint that it remains invisible until the Moon is deeply immersed in it. We must wait until the penumbra has reached roughly 70 percent across the Moon’s disk. For about the next 40 minutes the Full Moon will continue to appear to shine normally, although with each passing minute it is progressing ever deeper into the Earth's outer shadow.

Hey guys!
Sounds like you've got the same weather forecast that I do here seeker Maybe it will just be partly cloudy so we can all catch a glimpse.

It was completely overcast most of the day, and it started raining this afternoon. I was so bummed. BUT, it cleared up at exactly the moment the eclipse started!!!!! Awesome! I;m going to go back outside and take one last look before I go to bed... I hope ya'll got to see it too

S. CA had a cloudless sky (late start, thx PST) for the entire viewing, was absolutely stunning to see the deep red color and wow does an event such as this drive home just how small of a speck we are in the universe... makes most troubles seem insignificant, if only for a short while.

We had partially clear skies with a few thunderstorms here beachside. Of course a couple of those were covering the moon from about 8PM till midnight. All the while I could see the stars right above my head, how frustrating! Even the glass of cabernet didn't take the edge off.

The best we got was a tinge of pink through the lightening lit clouds. Bummer.

That's exactly how I felt the first time I saw an eclipse. We are just a speck in the universe
