I don't now recall where i came across the idea--there is such a feast of ghastly postulates out there--but a few years ago i encountered the suggestion that HAARP induced scalar phenomena, in conjunction with the atmospheric capacitance altering effects of judiciously placed, barium/ali loaded chemtrails, could be engineered to produce in horrifying reality the effects so graphically described in Revelation--to a multi megaton extent.

Again i don't recall where i read of it and saw some ghastly pictures (i don't collect these references, finding it sufficient to note the realities for myself) but it appears this tech was trialed in a small way at least once just recently in Iraq. Witnesses traumatised as everything in the field before them was pretty much and instantly vapourised in some entirely novel way.

From a pov in which 3rd WW (probably already underway, and maybe for some years) hostilities are arranged by contract with the (notionally) 'other side', technicalities aside, such delights don't seem to me completely unfeasible -- though i would love to be convinced that they were.

That 'pov' aside, i wonder if you might pick the 'reality' from the 'fantasy' as to the technical aspects of this suggestion or possibility?

I am still hoping, btw, that you might still do that some time in respect of the other questions i floated back on page 3 of this thread.

Some reading for ya
The Earth is wrapped in a donut shaped magnetic field.
Circular lines of flux continuously descend into the North
Pole and emerge from the South Pole. The ionosphere, an
electromagnetic-wave conductor, 100 kms above the earth,
consists of a layer of electrically charged particles acting
as a shield from solar winds. Natural waves are related to
the electrical activity in the atmosphere and are thought
to be caused by multiple lightning storms.

Collectively, these waves are called 'The Schumann Resonance',
the current strongest at 7.8 Hz. These are quasi-standing
extremely low frequency (ELF) waves that naturally exist in the
earth's 'electromagnetic' cavity, the space between the ground
and the ionosphere. These 'earth brainwaves' are identical to
the spectrum of our brainwaves.

(1 hertz = 1 cycle per second, 1 Khz = 1000, 1 Mhz =1 million.
A 1 Hertz wave is 186,000 miles long, 10 Hz is 18,600 miles.
Radio-waves move at the speed of light.)

The Creator designed living beings to resonate to this natural frequency pulsation in order to evolve harmoniously.

THE IONOSPHERE IS BEING MANIPULATED

The ionosphere is being manipulated by US govt. scientists using an Alaskan transmitter called HAARP, (High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) which sends focused radiated power to heat up sections of the ionosphere, which bounces power down again. ELF waves from HAARP when targeted on areas can weather-engineer and create mood changes affecting millions.

The intended wattage is 1,700 billion watts of power. A former govt. insider deduced they want to flip the world upside down. 64 elements in the ground modulate, with variation, the geomagnetic waves naturally coming from the ground. The 'earth's natural brain rhythm' above is balanced with these.

These are the same minerals as the red blood corpuscles. There is a relation between the blood and geomagnetic waves. An imbalance between Schumann and geomagnetic waves disrupts biorhythms. These natural geomagnetic waves are being replaced by artificially created very low frequency (VLF) ground waves coming from GWEN Towers.

GWEN (Ground Wave Emergency Network) transmitters placed 200 miles apart across the USA allow specific frequencies to be tailored to the geomagnetic-field strength in each area, allowing the magnetic field to be altered. They operate in the VLF range, with transmissions between VLF 150 and 175 KHz. They also emit UHF waves of 225 - 400 MHz.

The VLF signals travel by waves that hug the ground rather than radiating into the atmosphere. A GWEN station transmits circularly up to 300 miles, the signal dropping off sharply with distance. The entire GWEN system consists of, (depending on source of data), from 58 to an intended 300 transmitters spread across the USA, each with a tower 299-500 ft high. 300 ft copper wires in spoke like fashion fan out from the base of the system underground, interacting with the earth like a thin shelled conductor, radiating radio wave energy for very long distances through the ground.

USA bathes in this magnetic field which rises to 500 ft, even going down to basements, so everyone is mind-controlled. The whole artificial ground-wave spreads out over USA like a web. It is easier to mind-control and hypnotize people who are bathed in an artificial electromagnetic-wave. (Covering the entire floor with aluminum and buying a CET cylinder from Nordic Living Water Systems helps.) GWEN transmitters have many different functions including controlling the weather, mind, behavior and mood control and to send synthetic-telepathy as infrasound to those victims of US govt mind-control implants. These work in conjunction with HAARP and the Russian Woodpecker transmitter, similar to HAARP. The Russians openly market a small version of their weather-engineering system called Elate, which can fine-tune weather patterns over a 200 mile area and have the same range as the GWEN unit. One operates at Moscow airport. The GWEN Towers shoot enormous bursts of energy into the atmosphere in conjunction with HAARP. The website www.cuttingedge.org wrote an expose of how the major floods of the Mid-West USA occurred in 1993.

Invisible enormous rivers of water, consisting of vapors that flow, move towards the poles in the lower atmosphere. They rival the flow of the Amazon River and are 420 to 480 miles wide and up to 4,800 miles long. They are 1.9 miles above the earth and have volumes of 340 lbs of water per second. There are 5 atmospheric rivers in each Hemisphere. A massive flood can be created by damming up one of these massive vapor rivers, causing huge amounts of rainfall to be dumped. The GWEN Towers positioned along the areas north of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers were turned on for 40 days and 40 nights, probably mocking the Flood of Genesis. (This was in conjunction with HAARP, that creates a river of electricity flowing thousands of miles through the sky and down to the polar ice-cap, manipulating the jet-stream , like The Woodpecker.) These rivers flooded, causing agricultural losses of $12-15 billion. HAARP produces earthquakes by focusing on the fault lines. GWEN Towers are on the fault lines and volcanic areas of the Pacific Northeast.

In 1963 Dr Robert Becker explored effects of external magnetic-fields on brainwaves showing a relationship between psychiatric admissions and solar magnetic storms. He exposed volunteers to pulsed magnetic-fields similar to magnetic-storms, and found a similar response. US 60 Hz electric power ELF waves vibrate at the same frequency as the human brain. UK 50 Hz electricity emissions depress the thyroid.

Dr Andrija Puharich in the 50's/60's, found clairvoyant's brainwaves became 8 Hz when their powers were operative. He saw an Indian Yogi in 1956 controlling his brainwaves, deliberately shifting his consciousness from one level to another. Puharich trained people with bio-feedback to do this consciously, making 8 Hz waves. A healer made 8 Hz waves pass into a patient, healing their heart trouble, her brain emitting 8 Hz . One person emitting a certain frequency can make another also resonate to the same frequency. Our brains are extremely vulnerable to any technology which sends out ELF waves, because they immediately start resonating to the outside signal by a kind of tuning-fork effect. Puharich experimented discovering 7.83 Hz (earth's pulse rate) made a person 'feel good' producing an altered-state. 10.80 Hz causes riotous behaviour and 6.6 Hz causes depression. Puharich made ELF waves change RNA and DNA, breaking hydrogen bonds to make a person have a higher vibratory rate. He wanted to go beyond the psychic 8 Hz brainwave and attract psi phenomena. James Hurtak, who once worked for Puharich, also wrote in his book The Keys of Enoch that ultra-violet caused hydrogen bonds to break and this raised the vibratory rate.

Puharich presented the mental effects of ELF waves to military leaders but they would not believe him. He gave this information to certain dignitaries of other Western nations. The US govt burned down his home in New York to shut him up and he fled to Mexico. However Russians discovered which ELF frequencies did what to the human brain and began zapping the US Embassy in Moscow on 4 July 1976 with electromagnetic-waves, varying the signal, including focusing on 10 Hz. (10 Hz puts people into a hypnotic state, Russians and North Koreans use this in portable mind-control machines to extract confessions. Found also in an American church to help the congregation believe!) This Russian "Woodpecker" signal was traveling across the world from a transmitter near Kiev. The US Air Force identified 5 different frequencies in this compound harmonic Woodpecker was sending through the earth and atmosphere. Nikola Tesla revealed in 1901 power could be transmitted through the ground using ELF waves. Nothing stops or weakens these signals. The Russians retrieved Tesla's papers when they were returned to Yugoslavia after his death.

Puharich, in Mexico continued to monitor the Russian ELF wave signal and the higher harmonics (5.340 MHz) in the MHz range. He met the CIA and started working for them. He and Dr Robert Becker designed equipment to measure these waves and their effect on the human brain. Puharich started his work putting dogs to sleep. By 1948/49 he graduated to monkeys, deliberately destroying their eardrums to enable them to pick up sounds without the eardrum intact. He discovered a nerve from the tongue could be used to facilitate hearing. He created the tooth implant, that mind-control victims are now claiming was put in by their dentist unknowingly to them at the time, causing them to hear 'voices in their head.' This was placed under caps or lodged in the jaw.

Implants are now smaller than a hair's width and are injected with vaccine and flu shots. Millions have had this done unknowingly. These 'biochips' circulate in the bloodstream and lodge in the brain, enabling the victims to hear 'voices' via the implant. There are many kinds of implants now and 1 in 40 are victims from 'alien abduction' statistics, though 1 in 20 has also been gauged. [World-Action: In 2001, I was figuring a level of abduction far higher than people expect. Later in 2001, I saw a figure of 55% of Americans being abducted at some time during their life. And I believe, this was nearly always done in early childhood.] The fake alien abduction, revealed to be actually done by the US military using technology to make hologram spaceships outside, virtual reality scenarios of going onto a spaceship with humans in costumes, has been astutely perceived. Though real abductions occur, the 'alien abduction' scenario has been useful to stop any further investigation or accountability to the govt. authorities by the poor victims who would face being thought silly.

Are we being forced to respond to an artificially induced vibratory rate by our global masters, who want this planet to have a sudden leap in evolution, populated by the psychically aware and therefore superior class of human? Minus the billions of people who are 'useless eaters' disposed of by electro magnetically-induced cancers and diseases.

The physics and engineering behind electromagnetic disease transmission is frightening. Diseases can be reproduced as 'disease signatures' in that the vibration of a disease can be manufactured and sent on to be induced. (The brainwave pattern of hallucinogenic drugs can also be copied and sent by ELF waves to induce 'visions.) Once diseases are sprayed in the air, electromagnetic-waves attuned to the disease, using harmonics and subharmonics will make them more lethal and infectious by sending particular disease death-patterns.

Chemtrails sprayed daily all over USA (and other countries too) in a white criss-cross pattern in the skies contain diseases and chemicals which affect the state of consciousness, producing apathy along with fluoridation of the water, aspartame and drugs. Fluoride disables the willpower section of the brain, impairing the left occipital lobe.

Fluoride and selenium enable people to 'hear voices'. ELF waves create disturbances in the biological processes of the body and these can be activated in the population once the diseases are introduced into the body from the chemtrails.

Some chemtrails have been analyzed and shown to be creating cleavages in the spatial perceptions, blocking the interaction of various amino-acids that relate to higher-consciousness and to increase dopamine in the brain producing a listless, euphoric state of lower reactive mind. Basically to fog the difference between the real and unreal.

Some of this could be connected with the many UFO abductions occurring en-mass. Hundreds have been witnessed laid out on tables and implanted. Intelligence agencies are in league with each other behind this disablement of the masses to such a state where they can't even fight back. In order to do what they want they need the overall 'frequency' of each victim to function at a specific rate below the threshold of awareness.

Could this be part of a greater plan with mind-control transmitters covering the whole of USA and England, cleverly disguised as cell phone towers and trees? The power from microwave towers may be turned up to such a level that people will die.

A brain functioning at beta-level (above 13 Hz) is agitated and can't change the perceptions if it is artificially stabilized by technology to that frequency. This may increase body electricity in others, giving them psychic powers. Is this linked to the new-agers claim of a 12-14 Hz Schumann Resonance, inching us towards the 4th dimension? Stimulants ingested globally from higher caffeine genetically-modified plants, may also make an impact on the 'global-brain' in the ionosphere collecting our brainwaves. New-age channellers say we are going into 4th dimensional frequency. They 'heard' the voice of some 'ET' who told them. Some 'ETs' are local. Voices in the head were produced using Tesla technology in prisoners in Utah. Each of the prisoners received the same message from an 'ET'. It is easy to produce 'voices in the head' without implants now.

A prisoner called David Fratus in Draper Prison, Utah in 1988 wrote: "I began to receive, or hear, high-frequency tones in my ears. When I plug my ears.. the tones are still inside and become amplified. It's as if they had become electrified echo chambers with the sounds coming from the inside out.. I began to hear voices.. into my inner ears is as vivid as though I were listening to a set of stereo headphones.. with the end result being that I am now having my brain monitored by an omnipotent computerized mind reading or scanning machine of some sort "

Hundreds of inmates at the Gunnison Facility of the Utah State Prison, and the State Hospital were subject to this brand of mind-control in order to test it. In the early 1970s, this was brought out in the Utah U.S. District Court, because inmates who had been subjected to this Tesla-wave mind-control in prison tried unsuccessfully to fight back in court. The University of Utah researched how Tesla-waves could be used to manipulate the mind into hearing voices, overriding and implanting thoughts into the mind, and reading the thoughts, as well as developing eye-implants.

Cray computers using artificial-intelligence, monitor the victims of govt. produced implants sending pre-recorded sound-bytes or occasional live messages. They are picked up by satellite and relayed to whatever large TV broadcasting antenna, GWEN tower or other antenna is near the victim. It's believed that some types of implant pick up the signal and broadcast the correct Tesla-wave pattern to create voices within the victim.

The tracking implant keeps the staff and the satellite system informed every few minutes as to exactly where to send the voice signals. The master computer and central HQ for this is reported to be Boulder, CO. It is thought that transponders are being made there. The central cellular computer is in the Boulder, CO National Bureau of Standards building. AT&T is co-operating also. Several agencies work together on this.

Tim Rifat of UK wrote that "this inter-cerebral hearing is used to drive the victim mad, as no one else can hear the voices transmitted into the brain of the target. Transmission of auditory data directly into the target's brains using microwave carrier beams is now common practice. Instead of using excitation potentials, one uses a transducer to modify the spoken word into ELF audiograms, that are then superimposed on the pulse modulated microwave beam."

The Sydney Morning Herald on 21 March 1983 published this by Dr Nassim Abd El-Aziz Neweigy, Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Agriculture, Moshtohor Tukh-Kalubia, Egypt. It stated:

Russian satellites, controlled by advanced computers, can send voices in one's own language interweaving into natural thoughts to the population of choice to form diffused artificial thought. The chemistry and electricity of the human brain can be manipulated by satellite and even suicide can be induced. Through ferocious anti-humanitarian means, the extremist groups are fabricated, the troubles and bloody disturbances are instigated by advanced tele-means via Russian satellites, in many countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America.

Another source says that these have been fed with the world's languages and synthetic telepathy will reach into people's heads making people believe God is speaking to them personally to enact the Second Coming, complete with holograms! The Russians broke the genetic code of the human brain. They worked out 23 EEG band-wave lengths, 11 of which were totally independent. So if you can manipulate those 11 you can do anything. [OH NO THEY CAN'T! World-Action.]

NSA Cray computers can remotely track people just knowing the specific EMF waves (evoked potentials from EEGs in the 30-50 Hz, 5 milliwatt range) of a person's bioelectric-field. Each person's emissions are unique and they can remotely track someone in public.

Evoked-potentials officially don't exist in physics but in 1873 a Scotsman, James Clerk Maxwell discovered electromagnetic waves have 3 components. He discovered waveforms which exist at a certain number of right-angled rotations away from the electromagnetic-field. These are hyperspacial components, not subject to constraints of time and space. He claimed that electromagnetic-radiation waves were carried by the ether and the ether was disturbed by magnetic lines of force. The hidden component is called only 'potential' now and not normally used except for covert hyperdimensional physics and to manipulate consciousness itself via electromagnetic-waves covering vast areas of the planet.

Approx. one person in 3000 is sensitive to this magnetic-waveform component, the telepathic types, (according to a writer called "Majix") and we are all capable of tuning into this magnetic component by tuning our subconscious to it. Maxwell's successors thought potentials were akin to mysticism, because they believed fields contain mass which cannot be created from apparently nothing, which is what potentials are, both literally and mathematically - they are an accumulation or reservoir of energy and so this hasn't been taught in mainstream physics.

Subliminal words in the correct electromagnetic-field that expresses human consciousness, attuned to the human brain, can enter our minds at a subconscious level. Our brain activity patterns can apparently be measured and stored on computer by super-computers. If a victim needs subliminal-thoughts implanted, all that is necessary is to capture, save on computer and target the person's brainwave pattern to send them such low frequency subliminal-messages that they actually think it is their own thoughts. The researcher Majix says our brains are so sensitive that they are like liquid-crystal in response to the magnetic component of the earth.

We are sensitive to earth's magnetic changes,
changes in the ionospheric cavity and reresonate
those frequencies ourselves. We are incredibly
complex, beyond comprehension and a type
of biocosmic transducer.

He adds: Physicists in Russia correlate the mean annual magnetic-activity, electro-magnetic and electro-static fields on human behavior and medical indications. They are similar to biorhythms. These magnetic frequencies can be manipulated. Our brain waves can mimic magnetic frequencies from very simple equipment at extremely low power levels. From half a second to 4 seconds later, the neurons and brainwaves are driven exclusively by the device, with power levels almost nonexistent. All one needs is a circularly polarized antenna aimed up at the ionospheric cavity and they can manipulate the moods of everyone within a 75 sq. mile area. The body picks up these "new" manipulated waves and begins to correspond immediately. "Sleep" frequency will make everyone become tired and sleep.

In 1967 an "internationally renowned scientist" and Christopher Hills, a pendulum expert, communicated with some ETs. (It is not known who the scientist was but at one time both Hills and Puharich were with the medium Eileen Garrett and Puharich was communicating with ETs.)

In short, ETs communicated with us via modulated radio-waves, between 10,000 and 20,000 cycles below the known electromagnetic-spectrum. In the carrier-wave by amplitude modulation, mixed with frequency modulation. Single band energy, transmission power less than 25 watts. A naturally present wave on earth the brain modulated - a wave that resonates between the earth and the ionosphere. All humans influence the ionosphere in this manner. A reflecting technique involved. The brain modulation consisted of pulses, akin to those known from neuro pulses. Two humans can use this. Related to something akin to low frequency radar and to ultrasonic techniques but qualified. A mixed electro-acoustic wave function. The electromagnetic-wave induced an ultrasonic transduction in human tissue. The brain radiation has a sonic component to it as well as an electromagnetic component. Electromagnetic-radiation has a sonic component and it's dependent on the medium through which it travels.

The scientist cut through months of work. Now HAARP is slicing up the ionosphere, the world-brain, like a microwave knife, producing long tear incisions destroying the membrane which holds the reservoir of data accumulated by all earth's history.

A healer called Mr. A claimed to receive "Ancient Wisdom" from this protective Magnetic-Ring of energy which stores within it all knowledge since time began. Ruth Montgomery wrote about him in Born To Heal.

He claimed that if our energy flow is cut off from this magnetic-field, the Universal-Supply is obstructed and we are no longer in tune and start to get sick. The Power from this travels in split-seconds around the world and is available to anyone who is capable of receiving it and handling it. The waves from The Ring automatically translated into words in his mind, as wisdom to diagnose and heal others, coming from the storehouse of knowledge here since the beginning of time. He produced instant miracles, knitting broken bones and removing arthritis. A photo caught forked lightning coming from his fingers.

ABSTRACT

A method and apparatus for altering at least one selected region
which normally exists above the earth's surface. The region is
excited by electron cyclotron resonance heating to thereby
increase its charged particle density. In one embodiment,
circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation is transmitted
upward in a direction substantially parallel to and along a field
line which extends through the region of plasma to be altered.
The radiation is transmitted at a frequency which excites
electron cyclotron resonance to heat and accelerate the charged
particles. This increase in energy can cause ionization of
neutral particles which are then absorbed as part of the region
thereby increasing the charged particle density of the region.

DESCRIPTION

1. Technical Field

This invention relates to a method and apparatus for altering at
least one selected region normally existing above the earth's
surface and more particularly relates to a method and apparatus
for altering said at least one region by initially transmitting
electromagnetic radiation from the earth's surface essentially
parallel to and along naturally-occurring, divergent magnetic
field lines which extend from the earth's surface through the
region or regions to be altered.

2. Background Art

In the late 1950's, it was discovered that naturally-occuring
belts exist at high altitudes above the earth's surface, and it
is now established that these belts result from charged electrons
and ions becoming trapped along the magnetic lines of force
(field lines) of the earth's essentially dipole magnetic field.
The trapped electrons and ions are confined along the field lines
between two magnetic mirrors which exist at spaced apart points
along those field lines. The trapped electrons and ions move in
helical paths around their particular field lines and "bounce"
back and forth between the magnetic mirrors. These trapped
electrons and ions can oscillate along the field lines for long
periods of time.

In the past several years substantial effort has been made to
understand and explain the phenomena involved in belts of trapped
electrons and ions, and to explore possible ways to control and
use these phenomena for beneficial purposes. For example, in the
late 1950's and early 1960's both the United States and U.S.S.R.
detonated a series of nuclear devices of various yields to
generate large numbers of charged particles at various altitudes,
e.g., 200 kilometers (km) or greater. This was done in order to
establish and study artificial belts of trapped electrons and
ions. These experiments established that at least some of the
extraneous electrons and ions from the detonated devices did
become trapped along field lines in the earth's magnetosphere to
form artificial belts which were stable for prolonged periods of
time. For a discussion of these experiments see "The Radiation
Belt and Magnetosphere", W. N. Hess, Blaisdell Publishing Co.,
1968, pps. 155 et sec.

Other proposals which have been advanced for altering existing
belts of trapped electrons and ions and/or establishing similar
artificial belts include injecting charged particles from a
satellite carrying a payload of radioactive beta-decay material
or alpha emitters; and injecting charged particles from a
satellite-borne electron accelerator. Still another approach is
described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,042,196 wherein a low energy ionized
gas, e.g., hydrogen, is released from a synchronous orbiting
satellite near the apex of a radiation belt which is
naturally-occurring in the earth's magnetosphere to produce a
substantial increase in energetic particle precipitation and,
under certain conditions, produce a limit in the number of
particles that can be stably trapped. This precipitation effect
arises from an enhancement of the whistler-mode and ion-cyclotron
mode interactions that result from the ionized gas or "cold
plasma" injection.

It has also been proposed to release large clouds of barium in
the magnetosphere so that photoionization will increase the cold
plasma density, thereby producing electron precipitation through
enhanced whistler-mode interaction.

However, in all of the above-mentioned approaches, the mechanisms
involved in triggering the change in the trapped particle
phenomena must be actually positioned within the affected zone,
e.g., the magnetosphere, before they can be actuated to effect
the desired change.

The earth's ionosphere is not considered to be a "trapped" belt
since there are few trapped particles therein. The term "trapped"
herein refers to situations where the force of gravity on the
trapped particles is balanced by magnetic forces rather than
hydrostatic or collisional forces. The charged electrons and ions
in the ionosphere also follow helical paths around magnetic field
lines within the ionosphere but are not trapped between mirrors,
as in the case of the trapped belts in the magnetosphere. since
the gravitational force on the particles is balanced by
collisional or hydrostatic forces.

In recent years, a number of experiments have actually been
carried out to modify the ionosphere in some controlled manner to
investigate the possibility of a beneficial result. For detailed
discussions of these operations see the following papers: (1)
Ionospheric Modification Theory; G. Meltz and F. W. Perkins: (2)
The Platteville High Power facility; Carrol et al.; (3) Arecibo
Heating Experiments; W. E. Gordon and H. C. Carlson, Jr.; and (4)
Ionospheric Heating by Powerful Radio Waves; Meltz et al., all
published in Radio Science, Vol. 9, No. 11, November, 1974, at
pages 885-888; 889-894; 1041-1047; and 1049-1063, respectively,
all of which are incorporated herein by reference. In such
experiments, certain regions of the ionosphere are heated to
change the electron density and temperature within these regions.
This is accomplished by transmitting from earth-based antennae
high frequency electromagnetic radiation at a substantial angle
to, not parallel to, the ionosphere's magnetic field to heat the
ionospheric particles primarily by ohmic heating. The electron
temperature of the ionosphere has been raised by hundreds of
degrees in these experiments, and electrons with several electron
volts of energy have been produced in numbers sufficient to
enhance airglow. Electron concentrations have been reduced by a
few percent, due to expansion of the plasma as a result of
increased temperature.

In the Elmo Bumpy Torus (EBT), a controlled fusion device at the
Oak Ridge National Laboratory, all heating is provided by
microwaves at the electron cyclotron resonance interaction. A
ring of hot electrons is formed at the earth's surface in the
magnetic mirror by a combination of electron cyclotron resonance
and stochastic heating. In the EBT, the ring electrons are
produced with an average "temperature", of 250 kilo electron
volts or kev (2.5 X 10^9K) and a plasma beta between 0.1 and 0.4;
see, "A Theoretical Study of Electron Cyclotron Absorption in
Elmo Bumpy Torus", Batchelor and Goldfinger, Nuclear Fusion, Vol.
20, No. 4 (1980) pps. 403-418.

Electron cyclotron resonance heating has been used in experiments
on the earth's surface to produce and accelerate plasmas in a
diverging magnetic field. Kosmahl et al. showed that power was
transferred from the electromagnetic waves and that a fully
ionized plasma was accelerated with a divergence angle of roughly
13 degrees. Optimum neutral gas density was 1.7 X 10^14 per cubic
centimeter; see, "Plasma Acceleration with Microwaves Near
Cyclotron Resonance", Kosmahl et al., Journal of Applied Physics,
Vol. 38, No. 12, Nov., 1967, pps. 4576-4582.

DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for
altering at least one selected region which normally exists above
the earth's surface. The region is excited by electron cyclotron
resonance heating of electrons which are already present and/or
artificially created in the region to thereby increase the
charged particle energy and ultimately the density of the region.

In one embodiment this is done by transmitting circularly
polarized electromagnetic radiation from the earth's surface at
or near the location where a naturally-occurring dipole magnetic
field (force) line intersects the earth's surface. Right hand
circular polarization is used in the northern hemisphere and left
hand circular polarization is used in the southern hemisphere.
The radiation is deliberately transmitted at the outset in a
direction substantially parallel to and along a field line which
extends upwardly through the region to be altered. The radiation
is transmitted at a frequency which is based on the gyro
frequency of the charged particles and which, when applied to the
at least one region, excites electron cyclotron resonance within
the region or regions to heat and accelerate the charged
particles in their respective helical paths around and along the
field line. Sufficient energy is employed to cause ionization of
neutral particles (molecules of oxygen, nitrogen and the like,
particulates, etc.) which then become a part of the region
thereby increasing the charged particle density of the region.
This effect can further be enhanced by providing artificial
particles, e.g., electrons, ions, etc., directly into the region
to be affected from a rocket, satellite, or the like to
supplement the particles in the naturally-occurring plasma. These
artificial particles are also ionized by the transmitted
electromagnetic radiation thereby increasing charged particle
density of the resulting plasma in the region.

In another embodiment of the invention, electron cyclotron
resonance heating is carried out in the selected region or
regions at sufficient power levels to allow a plasma present in
the region to generate a mirror force which forces the charged
electrons of the altered plasma upward along the force line to an
altitude which is higher than the original altitude. In this case
the relevant mirror points are at the base of the altered region
or regions. The charged electrons drag ions with them as well as
other particles that may be present. Sufficient power, e.g.,
10^15 joules, can be applied so that the altered plasma can be
trapped on the field line between mirror points and will
oscillate in space for prolonged periods of time. By this
embodiment, a plume of altered plasma can be established at
selected locations for communication modification or other
purposes.

In another embodiment, this invention is used to alter at least
one selected region of plasma in the ionosphere to establish a
defined layer of plasma having an increased charged particle
density. Once this layer is established, and while maintaining
the transmission of the main beam of circularly polarized
electromagnetic radiation, the main beam is modulated and/or at
least one second different, modulated electromagnetic radiation
beam is transmitted from at least one separate source at a
different frequency which will be absorbed in the plasma layer.
The amplitude of the frequency of the main beam and/or the second
beam or beams is modulated in resonance with at least one known
oscillation mode in the selected region or regions to excite the
known oscillation mode to propagate a known frequency wave or
waves throughout the ionosphere.

BEST MODES FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION

The earth's magnetic field is somewhat analogous to a dipole bar
magnet. As such, the earth's magnetic field contains numerous
divergent field or force lines, each line intersecting the
earth's surface at points on opposite sides of the Equator. The
field lines which intersect the earth's surface near the poles
have apexes which lie at the furthest points in the earth's
magnetosphere while those closest to the Equator have apexes
which reach only the lower portion of the magnetosphere.

At various altitudes above the earth's surface, e.g., in both the
ionosphere and the magnetosphere, plasma is naturally present
along these field lines. This plasma consists of equal numbers of
positively and negatively charged particles (i.e., electrons and
ions) which are guided by the field line. It is well established
that a charged particle in a magnetic field gyrates about field
lines, the center of gyration at any instance being called the
"guiding center" of the particle. As the gyrating particle moves
along a field line in a uniform field, it will follow a helical
path about its guiding center, hence linear motion, and will
remain on the field line. Electrons and ions both follow helical
paths around a field line but rotate in opposite directions. The
frequencies at which the electrons and ions rotate about the
field line are called gyro magnetic frequencies or cyclotron
frequencies because they are identical with the expression for
the angular frequencies of gyration of particles in a cyclotron.
The cyclotron frequency of ions in a given magnetic field is less
than that of electrons, in inverse proportion to their masses.

If the particles which form the plasma along the earth's field
lines continued to move with a constant pitch angle, often
designated "alpha", they would soon impact on the earth's
surface. Pitch angle alpha is defined as the angle between the
direction of the earth's magnetic field and the velocity (V) of
the particle. However, in converging force fields, the pitch
angle does change in such a way as to allow the particle to turn
around and avoid impact. Consider a particle moving along a field
line down toward the earth. It moves into a region of increasing
magnetic field strength and therefore sine alpha increases. But
sine alpha can only increase to 1.0, at which point the particle
turns around and starts moving up along the field line, and alpha
decreases. The point at which the particle turns around is called
the mirror point, and there alpha equals ninety degrees. This
process is repeated at the other end of the field line where the
same magnetic field strength value B, namely Bm, exists. The
particle again turns around and this is called the "conjugate
point" of the original mirror point. The particle is therefore
trapped and bounces between the two magnetic mirrors. The
particle can continue oscillating in space in this manner for
long periods of time. The actual place where a particle will
mirror can be calculated from the following:

Bm=field strength at the mirror point

Recent discoveries have established that there are substantial
regions of naturally trapped particles in space which are
commonly called "trapped radiation belts". These belts occur at
altitudes greater than about 500 km and accordingly lie in the
magnetosphere and mostly above the ionosphere.

The ionosphere, while it may overlap some of the trapped-particle
belts, is a region in which hydrostatic forces govern its
particle distribution in the gravitational field. Particle motion
within the ionosphere is governed by both hydrodynamic and
electrodynamic forces. While there are few trapped particles in
the ionosphere, nevertheless, plasma is present along field lines
in the ionosphere. The charged particles which form this plasma
move between collisions with other particles along similar
helical paths around the field lines and although a particular
particle may diffuse downward into the earth's lower atmosphere
or lose energy and diverge from its original field line due to
collisions with other particles, these charged particles are
normally replaced by other available charged particles or by
particles that are ionized by collision with said particle. The
electron density (Ne) of the plasma will vary with the actual
conditions and locations involved. Also, neutral particles, ions,
and electrons are present in proximity to the field lines.

The production of enhanced ionization will also alter the
distribution Or atomic and molecular constituents of the
atmosphere, most notably through increased atomic nitrogen
concentration. The upper atmosphere is normally rich in atomic
oxygen (the dominant atmospheric constituent above 200 km
altitude), but atomic nitrogen is normally relatively rare. This
can be expected to manifest itself in increased airglow, among
other effects.

As known in plasma physics, the characteristics of a plasma can
be altered by adding energy to the charged particles or by
ionizing or exciting additional particles to increase the density
of the plasma. One way to do this is by heating the plasma which
can be accomplished in different ways, e.g., ohmic, magnetic
compression, shock waves, magnetic pumping, electron cyclotron
resonance, and the like.

Referring now to the drawings, the present invention provides a
method and apparatus for altering at least one region of plasma
which lies along a field line, particularly when it passes
through the ionosphere and/or magnetosphere. FIG. 1 is a
simplified illustration of the earth 10 and one of its dipole
magnetic force or field lines 11. As will be understood, line 11
may be any one of the numerous naturally existing field lines and
the actual geographical locations 13 and 14 of line 11 will be
chosen based on a particular operation to be carried out. The
actual locations at which field lines intersect the earth's
surface is documented and is readily ascertainable by those
skilled in the art.

Line 11 passes through region R which lies at an altitude above
the earth's surface. A wide range of altitudes are useful given
the power that can be employed by the practice of this invention.
The electron cyclotron resonance heating effect can be made to
act on electrons anywhere above the surface of the earth. These
electrons may be already present in the atmosphere, ionosphere,
and/or magnetosphere of the earth, or can be artificially
generated by a variety of means such as x-ray beams, charged
particle beams, lasers, the plasma sheath surrounding an object
such as a missile or meteor, and the like. Further, artificial
particles, e.g., electrons, ions, etc., can be injected directly
into region R from an earth-launched rocket or orbiting satellite
carrying, for example, a payload of radioactive beta-decay
material; alpha emitters; an electron accelerator; and/or ionized
gases such as hydrogen; see U.S. Pat. No. 4,042,196. The altitude
can be greater than about 50 km if desired, e.g., can be from
about 50 km to about 800 km, and, accordingly may lie in either
the ionosphere or the magnetosphere or both. As explained above,
plasma will be present along line 11 within region R and is
represented by the helical line 12. Plasma 12 is comprised of
charged particles (i.e., electrons and ions) which rotate about
opposing helical paths along line 11.

Antenna 15 is positioned as close as is practical to the location
14 where line 11 intersects the earth's surface. Antenna 15 may
be of any known construction for high directionality, for
example, a phased array, beam spread angle (symbol? circle with a
line) type. See "The MST Radar at Poker Flat, Alaska", Radio
Science, Vol. 15, No. 2, Mar.-Apr. 1980, pps. 213-223, which is
incorporated herein by reference. Antenna 15 is coupled to
transmitter 16 which generates a beam of high frequency
electromagnetic radiation at a wide range of discrete
frequencies, e.g., from about 20 to about 1800 kilohertz (kHz).

Transmitter 16 is powered by power generator means 17 which is
preferably comprised of one or more large, commercial electrical
generators. Some embodiments of the present invention require
large amounts of power, e.g., up to 10^9 to 10^11 watts, in
continuous wave or pulsed power. Generation of the needed power
is within the state of the art. Although the electrical
generators necessary for the practice of the invention can be
powered in any known manner, for example, by nuclear reactors,
hydroelectric facilities, hydrocarbon fuels, and the like, this
invention, because of its very large power requirement in certain
applications, is particularly adapted for use with certain types
of fuel sources which naturally occur at strategic geographical
locations around the earth. For example, large reserves of
hydrocarbons (oil and natural gas) exist in Alaska and Canada. In
northern Alaska, particularly the North Slope region, large
reserves are currently readily available. Alaska and northern
Canada also are ideally located geographically as to magnetic
latitudes. Alaska provides easy access to magnetic field lines
that are especially suited to the practice of this invention,
since many field lines which extend to desirable altitudes for
this invention intersect the earth in Alaska. Thus, in Alaska,
there is a unique combination of large, accessible fuel sources
at desirable field line intersections. Further, a particularly
desirable fuel source for the generation of very large amounts of
electricity is present in Alaska in abundance, this source being
natural gas. The presence of very large amounts of clean-burning
natural gas in Alaskan latitudes, particularly on the North
Slope, and the availability of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD), gas
turbine, fuel cell, electrogasdynamic (EGD) electric generators
which operate very efficiently with natural gas provide an ideal
power source for the unprecedented power requirements of certain
of the applications of this invention. For a more detailed
discussion Or the various means for generating electricity from
hydrocarbon fuels, see "Electrical Aspects of Combustion", Lawton
and Weinberg. Clarendon Press, 1969. For example, it is possible
to generate the electricity directly at the high frequency needed
to drive the antenna system. To do this, typically the velocity
of flow of the combustion gases (v), past magnetic field
perturbation of dimension d (in the case of MHD), follow the
rule:

where f is the frequency at which electricity is generated. Thus,
if v= 1.78 x 10^6 cm/sec and d=l cm then electricity would be
generated at a frequency of 178 mHz.

FIG. 3 is an idealized representation of movement of plasma 12
upon excitation by electron cyclotron resonance within the
earth's divergent force field. Electrons (e) are accelerated to
velocities required to generate the necessary mirror force to
cause their upward movement. At the same time neutral particles
(n) which are present along line 11 in region R are ionized and
become part of plasma 12. As electrons (e) move upward along line
11, they drag ions (i) and neutrals (n) with them but at an angle
(symbol circle with line) of about 13 degrees to field line 11.
Also, any particulates that may be present in region R, will be
swept upwardly with the plasma. As the charged particles of
plasma 12 move upward, other particles such as neutrals within or
below R, move in to replace the upwardly moving particles. These
neutrals, under some conditions, can drag with them charged
particles.

For example, as a plasma moves upward, other particles at the
same altitude as the plasma move horizontally into the region to
replace the rising plasma and to form new plasma. The kinetic
energy developed by said other particles as they move
horizontally is, for example, on the same order of magnitude as
the total zonal kinetic energy of stratospheric winds known to
exist.

Referring again to FIG. 2, plasma 12 in region R is moved upward
along field line 11. The plasma 12 will then form a plume
(cross-hatched area in FIG. 2) which will be relatively stable
for prolonged periods of time. The exact period of time will vary
widely and be determined by gravitational forces and a
combination of radiative and diffusive loss terms. In the
previous detailed example, the calculations were based on forming
a plume by producing O+ energies of 2 ev/particle. About 10 ev
per particle would be required to expand plasma 12 to apex point
C (FIG. l). There at least some of the particles of plasma 12
will be trapped and will oscillate between mirror points along
field line 11. This oscillation will then allow additional
heating of the trapped plasma 12 by stochastic heating which is
associated with trapped and oscillating particles. See "A New
Mechanism for Accelerating Electrons in the Outer Ionosphere" by
R. A. Helliwell and T. F. Bell, Journal of Geophysical Research'
Vol. 65, No. 6, June, 1960. This is preferably carried out at an
altitude of at least 500 km.

The plasma of the typical example might be employed to modify or
disrupt micro-wave transmissions of satellites. If less than
total black-out of transmission is desired (e.g., scrambling by
phase shifting digital signals), the density of the plasma (Ne)
need only be at least about 10^6 per cubic centimeter for a
plasma originating at an altitude of from about 250 to about 400
km and accordingly less energy (i.e., electromagnetic radiation),
e.g., 10^8 joules need be provided. Likewise, if the density Ne
is on the order of 10^8, a properly positioned plume will provide
a reflecting surface for VHF waves and can be used to enhance,
interfere with, or otherwise modify communication transmissions.

It can be seen from the foregoing that by appropriate application
of various aspects of this invention at strategic locations and
with adequate power sources, a means and method is provided to
cause interference with or even total disruption of
communications over a very large portion of the earth. This
invention could be employed to disrupt not only land based
communications, both civilian and military, but also airborne
communications and sea communications (both surface and
subsurface). This would have significant military implications,
particularly as a barrier to or confusing factor for hostile
missiles or airplanes.

The belt or belts of enhanced ionization produced by the method
and apparatus of this invention, particularly if set up over
Northern Alaska and Canada, could be employed as an early warning
device, as well as a communications disruption medium. Further,
the simple ability to produce such a situation in a practical
time period can by itself be a deterring force to hostile action.
The ideal combination of suitable field lines intersecting the
earth's surface at the point where substantial fuel sources are
available for generation of very large quantities of
electromagnetic power, such as the North Slope of Alaska,
provides the wherewithal to accomplish the foregoing in a
practical time period, e.g., strategic requirements could
necessitate achieving the desired altered regions in time periods
of two minutes or less and this is achievable with this
invention, especially when the combination of natural gas and
magnetohydrodynamic, gas turbine, fuel cell and/or EGD electric
generators are employed at the point where the useful field lines
intersect the earth's surface.

One feature of this invention which satisfies a basic requirement
of a weapon system, i.e., continuous checking of operability, is
that small amounts of power can be generated for operability
checking purposes. Further, in the exploitation of this
invention, since the main electromagnetic beam which generates
the enhanced ionized belt of this invention can be modulated
itself and/or one or more additional electromagnetic radiation
waves can be impinged on the ionized region formed by this
invention as will be described in greater detail herein after
with respect to FIG. 4, a substantial amount of randomly
modulated signals of very large power magnitude can be generated
in a highly nonlinear mode. This can cause confusion of or
interference with or even complete disruption of guidance systems
employed by even the most sophisticated of airplanes and
missiles. The ability to employ and transmit over very wide areas
of the earth a plurality of electromagnetic waves of varying
frequencies and to change same at will in a random manner,
provides a unique ability to interfere with all modes of
communications, land, sea, and/or air, at the same time. Because
of the unique juxtaposition of usable fuel source at the point
where desirable field lines intersect the earth's surface, such
wide ranging and complete communication interference can be
achieved in a reasonably short period of time. Because of the
mirroring phenomenon discussed herein above, it can also be
prolonged for substantial time periods so that it would not be a
mere transient effect that could simply be waited out by an
opposing force. Thus, this invention provides the ability to put
unprecedented amounts of power in the earth's atmosphere at
strategic locations and to maintain the power injection level,
particularly if random pulsing is employed, in a manner far more
precise and better controlled than heretofore accomplished, by
the prior art, particularly by the detonation of nuclear
devices of various yields at various altitudes.

Where the prior art approaches yielded merely transitory effects,
the unique combination of fuel and desirable field lines at the
point where the fuel occurs allows; the establishment of,
compared to prior art approaches, precisely controlled and
long-lasting effects which cannot, practically speaking, simply
be waited out. Further, by knowing the frequencies of the various
electromagnetic beams employed in the practice of this invention,
it is possible not only to interfere with third party
communications but to take advantage of one or more such beams to
carry out a communications network even though the rest of the
world's communications are disrupted. Put another way, what is
used to disrupt another's communications can be employed by one
knowledgeable of this invention as a communications network at
the same time.

In addition, once one's own communication network is established,
the far-reaching extent of the effects of this invention could be
employed to pick up communication signals of other(s) for
intelligence purposes. Thus, it can be seen that the disrupting
effects achievable by this invention can be employed to benefit
by the party who is practicing this invention since knowledge of
the various electromagnetic waves being employed and how they
will vary in frequency and magnitude can be used to an advantage
for positive communication and eavesdropping purposes at the same
time. However, this invention is not limited to locations where
the fuel source naturally exists or where desirable field lines
naturally intersect the earth's surface. For example, fuel,
particularly hydrocarbon fuel, can be transported by pipeline and
the like to the location where the invention is to be practiced.

This invention has a phenomenal variety of possible ramifications
and potential future developments. As alluded to earlier, missile
or aircraft destruction, deflection, or confusion could result.
particularly when relativistic particles are employed. Also.
large regions of the atmosphere could be lifted to an
unexpectedly high altitude so that missiles encounter unexpected
and unplanned drag forces with resultant destruction or
deflection of same. Weather modification is possible by, for
example, altering upper atmosphere wind patterns or altering
solar absorption patterns by constructing one or more plumes of
atmospheric particles which will act as a lens or focusing
device.

Also as alluded to earlier, molecular modifications of the
atmosphere can take place so that positive environmental effects
can be achieved. Besides actually changing the molecular
composition of an atmospheric region, a particular molecule or
molecules can be chosen for increased presence. For example,
ozone, nitrogen, etc. concentrations in the atmosphere could be
artificially increased. Similarly, environmental enhancement
could be achieved by causing the breakup of various chemical
entities such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides,
and the like.

Transportation of entities can also be realized when advantage is
taken of the drag effects caused by regions of the atmosphere
moving up along diverging field lines. Small micron sized
particles can be then transported. and, under certain
circumstances and with the availability of sufficient energy,
larger particles or objects could be similarly affected.
Particles with desired characteristics such as tackiness,
reflectivity, absorptivity, etc., can be transported for specific
purposes or effects. For example, a plume of tacky particles
could be established to increase the drag on a missile or
satellite passing there through. Even plumes of plasma having
substantially less charged particle density than described above
will produce drag effects on missiles which will affect a
lightweight (dummy) missile in a manner substantially different
than a heavy (live) missile and this affect can be used to
distinguish between the two types of missiles. A moving plume
could also serve as a means for supplying a space station or for
focusing vast amount of sunlight on selected portions of the
earth.

Surveys of global scope could also be realized because the
earth's natural magnetic field could be significantly altered in
a controlled manner by plasma beta effects resulting in, for
example, improved magnetotelluric surveys. Electromagnetic pulse
defenses are also possible. The earth's magnetic field could be
decreased or disrupted at appropriate altitudes to modify or
eliminate the magnetic field in high Compton electron generation
(e.g., from high altitude nuclear bursts) regions. High
intensity, well controlled electrical fields can be provided in
selected locations for various purposes. For example, the plasma
sheath surrounding a missile or satellite could be used as a
trigger for activating such a high intensity field to destroy the
missile or satellite.

Further, irregularities can be created in the ionosphere which
will interfere with the normal operation of various types of
radar, e.g., synthetic aperture radar. The present invention can
also be used to create artificial belts of trapped particles
which in turn can be studied to determine the stability of such
parties. Still further, plumes in accordance with the present
invention can be formed to simulate and/or perform the same
functions as performed by the detonation of a "heave" type
nuclear device without actually having to detonate such a device.
Thus it can be seen that the ramifications are numerous,
far-reaching, and exceedingly varied in usefulness.

When I learned that Nikoli Tesla invented the radio, and not Marconi, I was shocked. Tesla also invented the electric generator, the electric motor, fluorescent lighting, alternating current (AC) and devised the technologies that generate and deliver our electrical power for our homes, schools and factories. So why didn't I ever learn about Tesla in school -- the same way I learned about Thomas Edison, Marconi and Einstein?

The story about Nikoli Tesla is the story of a genius who was largely disrespected and abused by other scientists and inventors -- many of whom stole his ideas and took credit for his discoveries. But how did this happen?

Tesla had a vision of electromagnetic fields
that was real and tangible...
Born to a Siberian family on July 9th, 1856 in Smiljan, Croatia (former Yugoslavia), Nikola Tesla was a dreamer with a poetic touch. His first "invention" consisted of a rotary engine, powered by insects that the young Tesla had glued to a paper wheel. This boyhood fascination with motors developed a unique mental ability where Tesla could visualize inventions in his mind, complete to the most minute detail, and execute these plans without the need for a blueprint or meticulous calculations.

As an adult, Tesla attended the Technical University at Graz, Austria, and the University of Prague. At Graz he first saw the Gramme dynamo, which operated as a generator and, when reversed, became an electric motor, and from this observation he conceived a way to use alternating current to advantage. Tesla had a vision of electromagnetic fields that was real and tangible, at a time when most engineers considered electrical current as an intangible and ethereal mystery. Later, at Budapest, he visualized the principle of the rotating magnetic field and developed plans for an induction motor that would become his first step toward the successful utilization of alternating current.

An eccentric genius, Tesla had few friends and remained reclusive. He never had a home in America, choosing instead to live in hotels. During the final few decades of his life he withdrew in a New York hotel, only granting interviews and making annual public appearances on his birthdays. At these press conferences Tesla proposed future inventions, but his accounts were frequently distorted by the popular press. After Tesla's death the Federal Bureau of Investigation took note of Tesla's proposals for advanced weapons systems and searched his papers for information about reports of his death ray machine as world conflict was impending. (see also Weapon of Total Destruction, Viewzone back issue.)

Tesla's discovery of the rotating magnetic field produced by the interactions of two and three phase alternating currents in a motor winding was one of his most significant achievements of the century, and formed the basis of his induction motor and polyphase system for the generation and distribution of electricity.

In 1882, before his arrival in America, Tesla went to work in Paris for the Continental Edison Company, and, while on assignment to Strassburg in 1883, he constructed, in after-work hours, his first induction motor. Tesla sailed for America in 1884, arriving in New York, with four cents in his pocket, a few of his own poems, and calculations for a flying machine. He first found employment with Thomas Edison, who had been his first employer in Paris, but the two inventors were far apart in background and methods, and their separation was inevitable.

Tesla continued to work on his inventions, and seizing a momentous opportunity, George Westinghouse purchased some of Tesla's patents in 1888. For a mere $60,000($5,000 in cash and 150 shares of stock), Westinghouse acquired the patent for Tesla's polyphase alternating current technology. Tesla's reputation spread when Westinghouse won the contract to supply the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 with electricity. In 1895, the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company and General Electric Company joined forces to harness the power of Niagara Falls with electricity, using Tesla's technology.

Tesla's generation of electricity resulted in what is known as alternating current, or AC. In alternating current the polarity and strength of the energy is continuously changing or alternating. Prior to Tesla's innovation, the Edison company was promoting direct current, or DC, as a safer way to power both homes and factories. In fact, Edison, despite knowing that Tesla's AC was superior, mounted an ugly publicity stunts designed to discredit Tesla and to save Edison's own financial investment in DC.

Animals were brutally electrocuted with AC, including an elephant, which were recorded by Edison and shown at public gatherings.
Edison embarked on a number of propaganda campaigns which attempted to persuade the general public that AC was dangerous. Nicknamed the "death current" by Edison, public demonstrations were staged in which animals were brutally electrocuted with AC, including an elephant, which were recorded by Edison and shown at public gatherings.

Despite the public's fear of AC, Tesla had the upper hand. Direct current was good only for short distances. The accumulated resistance in metallic wires and cables greatly reduced the electrical power as it traveled through the transmission lines. AC, on the other hand, did not suffer the same loss and was able to travel great distances with little loss of potential.

Also, because alternating current could react with coils of wire (transformers) to increase or decrease the voltage, electricity could be produced at high power levels at the generation stations and then reduced just prior to being distributed locally. Eventually, Edison lost his battle and alternating current became the electric industry standard. To this day, the three-phase form of Tesla's polyphase system is still used for the generation and transmission of most electricity. Moreover, the conversion of electricity into mechanical power is made possible by updated versions of Tesla's three-phase and split phase motors.

Tesla's experiments with high frequency and high potential alternating currents resulted in the development of the "Tesla coil." This device is a transformer with an air core that has both its primary and secondary tuned in resonance. As part of other experiments Tesla also developed the precursors of modern neon and florescent lights. He constructed these lights, elongated glass tubes filled with gas and coated with phosphor, excited in his high voltage experiments. He also discovered that high voltage current could be made harmless by using an alternating current scheme at very large frequencies.

Returning to New York in 1900, Tesla began construction on Long Island of a wireless world broadcasting tower, with $150,000 capital from the American financier J. Pierpont Morgan. Tesla claimed he secured the loan by assigning 51 percent of his patent rights of telephony and telegraphy to Morgan. He expected to provide worldwide communication and to furnish facilities for sending pictures, messages, weather warnings, and stock reports. The project was abandoned because of a financial panic, labor troubles, and Morgan's withdrawal of support. It was Tesla's greatest defeat.

In 1943, the Supreme Court granted full rights to Tesla for the invention of radio, nullifying the claims of Marchese Gugliemo Marconi who had patented a two-tuned-circuit design and a more practical four-tuned-circuit modeled after Tesla's. Marconi's patent on the invention of radio was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court because Tesla's work predated it (Case #369, 6/21/43). Marconi did succeed in beating Tesla as the first person to send a wireless telegraph across the Atlantic, which prompted Tesla to remark, "Let him continue. He is using seventeen of my patents." In addition, Tesla's 1903 patents 723,188 and 725,605 contain the basic principles of the logical AND circuit element basic to all computers.

Tesla also envisioned a way to send electricity through the air and through the Earth so that electrical power would be available everywhere, even in remote corners of the planet. This technology, which was only understood by Tesla himself, was incorporated in another famous experiment in 1908, where Tesla attempted to remotely light up the sky over the North Pole as a way of demonstrating this wireless power transmission technology to the world. At the time, Admiral Peary was leading an expedition to the Arctic and Tesla hoped that Peary would report on the phenomenon when he returned.

Many believe that Tesla's experiment that evening caused the world's largest man made explosion in the remote Siberian village of Tungusta. Read more about that HERE.

If Tesla's power beam really did accidentally cause the Tungusta explosion, then we witnessed the first experimental use of the same weapon system has been developed by the US Department of Defense in Alaska's remote Poker Flats area, just North of Fairbanks. (See HAARP: A weapon of Total Destruction.) Although the capacity for destruction in Tesla's primitive prototype (some estimate equal to a large hydrogen bomb) was huge, this new military system is almost surely many magnitudes greater. Also, many similar systems have been deployed in a dozen specific locations around the globe -- presumably to be operated together for some undisclosed purpose. One can only hope that this new technology will be used for a peaceful purpose and that it will bring the respect for Tesla that has so far eluded him.

Alternating Current vs. Direct Current
All the principles of generating electricity had been worked out in the 19th Century, but by its end these had only just begun to produce electricity on a large scale. The 20th Century has witnessed a colossal expansion of electrical power generation and distribution. The general pattern has been toward ever-larger units of production, using steam from coal- or oil-fired boilers. Economies of scale and the greater physical efficiency achieved as higher steam temperatures and pressures were attained both reinforced this tendency. U.S. experience indicates the trend: in the first decade of the century a generating unit with a capacity of 25,000 kilowatts with pressures up to 200-300 pounds per square inch at 400º-500º F (about 200º-265º C) was considered large, but by 1930 the largest unit was 208,000 kilowatts, with pressures of 1,200 pounds per square inch at a temperature of 725º F, while the amount of fuel necessary to produce a kilowatt-hour of electricity and the price to the consumer had fallen dramatically.

As the market for electricity increased, so did the distance over which it was transmitted, and the efficiency of transmission required higher and higher voltages. The small direct-current generators of early urban power systems were abandoned in favor of alternating-current systems, which could be adapted more readily to high voltages. Transmission over a line of 155 miles (250 kilometers) was established in California in 1908 at 110,000 volts; Hoover Dam in the 1930s used a line of 300 miles (480 kilometers) at 287,000 volts. The latter case may serve as a reminder that hydroelectric power, using a fall of water to drive water turbines, has been developed to generate electricity where the climate and topography make it possible to combine production with convenient transmission to a market. Remarkable levels of efficiency have been achieved in modern plants.

One important consequence of the ever-expanding consumption of electricity in the industrialized countries has been the linking of local systems to provide vast power grids, or pools, within which power can be shifted easily to meet changing local needs for current.

AC has other advantages:

AC generators are simple, cheaper and more reliable than DC generators
AC can readily be switched by circuit breakers at any voltage, whereas DC can only be switched at low voltages
AC motors and other electrical appliances are cheaper, simpler, and more reliable than those designed to work with DC
The frequency can be very precisely controlled and so AC is useful in motors that require accurate speed eg. Clocks, tape recorders, VHS machines.
So, while Thomas Edison receives the greater part of credit, it is clear that we owe respect and gratitude for Nikola Tesla's creative and intelligent mind.

A nightmarish US super weapon reportedly was employed by American ground forces during chaotic street fighting in Baghdad. The secret tank-mounted weapon was witnessed in all its frightening power by Majid al-Ghazali, a seasoned Iraqi infantryman who described the device and its gruesome effects as unlike anything he had ever encountered in his lengthy military service. The disturbing revelation is yet another piece of cinematic evidence brought back from postwar Iraq by intrepid filmmaker Patrick Dillon.

In the film, al-Ghazali, whose english is less than fluent, describes the weapon as reminiscent of a flame thrower, only immensely more powerful. It is unclear what principle the weapon is based on. Searching for a description, al-Ghazali said it appeared to be shooting concentrated lightning bolts rather than just ordinary flames. Drawing on his many years as a professional engineer, al-Ghazali speculates that radiation of some kind probably figures into the weapon's hideous capabilities. Like all men in Saddam's Iraq, al-Ghazali was compelled to serve in the Iraqi equivalent of the Army National Guard and fought in three wars over the past thirty-odd years. Via email, he told me he has seen virtually every type of conventional weapon employed in battle, and is well acquainted with their effects on people and machines, but nothing in his extensive combat experience prepared him for the shock of what he saw in Baghdad on April 12th.

On that date, al-Ghazali and his family sheltered in their house as a fierce street battle erupted in his neighborhood. In the midst of the fighting, he noticed that the Americans had called up an oddly configured tank. Then to his amazement the tank suddenly let loose a blinding stream of what seemed like fire and lightning, engulfing a large passenger bus and three automobiles. Within seconds the bus had become semi-molten, sagging "like a wet rag" as he put it. He said the bus rapidly melted under this withering blast, shrinking until it was a twisted blob about the dimensions of a VW bug. As if that were not bizarre enough, al-Ghazali explicitly describes seeing numerous human bodies shriveled to the size of newborn babies. By the time local street fighting ended that day, he estimates between 500 and 600 soldiers and civilians had been cooked alive as a result of the mysterious tank-mounted device.

In a city littered everywhere with burned-out civilian and military vehicles, US forces were abnormally scrupulous about immediately detailing bulldozers and shovel crews to the job of burying the grim wreckage. Nevertheless, telltale remnants remained as Dillon found when al-Ghazali later took him to the site. Dillon said they easily uncovered large puddles of resolidified metal and mounds of weird fibrous material that, al-Ghazali explained, were all that remained of the vehicles' tires. Dillon, who accumulated plenty of battlefield experience as a medic in Viet-Nam, and has since covered a number of wars from Somalia to Kosovo, told me that he has witnessed every kind of conventional ordnance that can be used on humans and vehicles. " I've seen a freaking smorgasbord of destruction in my life," he said, "flame-throwers, napalm, white phosphorous, thermite, you name it. I know of nothing short of an H-bomb that conceivably might cause a bus to instantly liquefy or that can flash broil a human body down to the size of an infant. God pity humanity if that thing is a preview of what's in store for the 21st century."

For Majid al-Ghazali, images of the terrifying weapon and its victims haunt his every day. In addition to his work as an engineer, he is also a highly accomplished classical violinist, occupying the first chair in the Baghdad Symphony. He is widely acknowledged as one of the preeminent violinists in the Middle East. Besides his family, one of his greatest joys is teaching at Baghdad's premier music conservatory. Unfortunately, the conservatory was utterly destroyed. Yet somehow, despite the war's horrors and its seemingly endless privations, he manages to maintain a remarkably hopeful outlook. He recently informed me that the Baghdad Symphony continues to exist and has been invited to perform in the United States in December.

It was truly terrifying reading the article on your newsite about Patrick Dillon's far reaching journalism into the war in Iraq. There's a true hero in my mind. The weapons described by Majid al-Ghazali would seem to me to fit into the electromagnetic pulse weapons category. And then, these weapons are mentioned in a New York Post article the day before the Cox News article appeared, and President Bush speaks of using these pulse weapons as a means to "disable Saddam (Hussein)'s entire command and control structure."

Super surge protectors are being designed that would possibly block the pulse of the weapon. I put the two together in my mind's eye and I saw the opening scene from the Terminator movie.

It had better be a brave new world, with governments beginning to wield these sorts of weapons into our battlefields now. Who knows where next.

The Cox News article goes on to say China, Great Britain and France are also experimenting with these arsenals. No mention of Russia, though. Interesting.

Super-Secret Microwave Weapons May Be Used In Iraq

WASHINGTON -- An army may still travel on its stomach, but a vital point of attack these days is the brain -- the electronic brain.

With modern warfare so dependent on computers and communications devices, a weapon that renders them useless could be invaluable. And after decades of research, U.S. scientists and engineers may be close to fielding an effective technology known as high-powered microwave weapons.

At least, that is the latest buzz. Recent articles have speculated microwave weapons could be deployed if the United States invades Iraq. But some experts -- including Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld -- say considerable work remains.

"It's been this elegant promise for decades that never quite seems to happen," said John Alexander, author of "Future War: Non-Lethal Weapons in Twenty-First Century Warfare" and a retired Army colonel who directed non-lethal weapons development at Los Alamos National Laboratory. "The check's always in the mail."

The concept behind high-powered microwave weapons is simple. A burst of electromagnetic energy is created and directed at an enemy's electronics. The force burns them out much like a lightning strike can destroy home appliances.

Challenges, though, lie in a number of areas, according to several experts.

For example, delivering the weapons would likely be done by cruise missiles or unmanned aerial vehicles to help get close to the target. That requires making the weapons not only high powered, but also rugged and relatively small, which Air Force Col. Eileen Walling labeled "extremely challenging and technically difficult" in a paper she wrote in 2000 on the weapons.

Alexander explained another problem: unpredictability, even when everything goes right.

"Electrical components are really rather tricky," he said. "You can put the same amount of energy into 10 identical targets and you can destroy two of them, upset five of them and, in three of them, nothing happens."

High-powered microwave weapons are one component of a broader category known as directed energy weapons that includes lasers.

"When people are talking about high-powered microwave weapons, they're not talking about a single device like the stealth bomber," said John Pike, director of globalsecurity.org, a Washington-area policy organization seeking to reduce reliance on nuclear weapons. "Rather, they're talking about a physical principle and an effect which can be generated a number of different ways for a number of different purposes."

Most of the Defense Department's work on high-powered microwave weapons takes place at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, N.M..

"We are looking at different sources and devices that can produce that microwave energy and propel it," said Rich Garcia, a spokesman for the project where nearly all of the work is classified.

Researchers also are exploring ways to block incoming high-powered microwave weapons. That will require something of a super surge protector, experts point out, because the blasts are so intense and brief they can escape detection.

The former Soviet Union once was deeply involved in exploring high-powered microwave weapons, but it is now thought Russia is no longer pursuing them. Other nations believed to be conducting research are China, Great Britain and France.

Earlier this month, the widely respected magazine Aviation Week & Space Technology printed an article stating that "an attack on Iraq is expected to see the first use of high-power microwave weapons..."

The New York Post, citing unnamed U.S. military officials, reported yesterday that a preliminary Iraq battle plan "outlined for President Bush last week calls for the most extensive use of electronic and psychological warfare in history -- including secret new electromagnetic pulse weapons to disable Saddam (Hussein)'s entire command and control structure."
