Strange Twist In Berg Case

Al-Zarqawi is believed to be behind well over a dozen high-profile attacks in Iraq, and many other acts of violence, which have killed hundreds.

(CBS/AP) As the family of slain American Nicholas Berg gathered Friday for a private memorial service, new details emerged about his contact with FBI terrorism investigators after Sept. 11, as well as his final days in Iraq.

Berg, a 26-year-old small businessman who went to Iraq seeking a role in reconstruction, was found dead Saturday. On Tuesday, an Islamic Web site posted video in which masked militants beheaded him. The CIA has identified the speaker in the video — the man who murdered Berg — as Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a terrorist suspected in numerous attacks in Iraq.

CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin reports U.S. officials say the FBI questioned Berg in 2002 after a computer password Berg used in college turned up in the possession of Zacarias Moussaoui, the al Qaeda operative arrested shortly before Sept. 11 for his suspicious activity at a flight school in Minnesota.

The bureau had already dismissed the connection between Berg and Moussaoui as nothing more than a college student who had been careless about protecting his password.

But in the wake of Berg's gruesome murder, it becomes a stranger-than-fiction coincidence — an American who inadvertently gave away his computer password to one suspected al Qaeda operative, Moussaoui, is later murdered by another notorious al Qaeda operative, Zarqawi.

The slain man's father, Michael Berg, told reporters Thursday that his son was cleared of any wrongdoing. He said Nicholas Berg met Moussaoui while riding the bus to classes, and had allowed the suspect to use his computer.

The 2002 FBI interview could also explain the bureau's interest in Berg while he was detained by authorities in Iraq shortly before the militants kidnapped and killed him.

Berg was picked up on March 24 and released on April 6. The details of that detention are the subject of a dispute between the Berg family and the U.S. government.

The family contends Berg was detained by the U.S. military, and even filed suit seeking his release on April 5. The U.S. military says Iraqi police detained him. Iraqi police deny that.

To back its claims that Berg was in U.S. custody, the family on Thursday gave The Associated Press copies of e-mails from Beth A. Payne, the U.S. consular officer in Iraq.

"I have confirmed that your son, Nick, is being detained by the U.S. military in Mosul. He is safe. He was picked up approximately one week ago. We will try to obtain additional information regarding his detention and a contact person you can communicate with directly," Payne wrote to Berg's father on April 1.

Payne repeated that Berg was "being detained by the U.S. military" in an e-mail the same day to Berg's mother, Suzanne. The next day, Payne wrote that she was still trying to find a local contact for the family, but added that "given the security situation in Iraq it is not easy."

The government says the e-mail from Payne was false. State Department spokeswoman Kelly Shannon said Payne's information came from the Coalition Provisional Authority. The authority did not tell Payne until April 7 that Berg had been held by Iraqi police and not the U.S. military, she said.

"As Mr. Berg had been released, the consular officer did not convey this information to the family because he was released, thankfully," Shannon said. "And we thought he was on his way."

Coalition spokesman Dan Senor said Wednesday that Iraqi police arrested Berg in Mosul on March 24 because local authorities believed he may have been involved in "suspicious activities."

In Mosul, police chief Maj. Gen. Mohammed Khair al-Barhawi insisted Thursday that his department had never arrested Berg and maintained he had no knowledge of the case.

During his detention, Berg was questioned by FBI agents three times.

Berg is believed to have been kidnapped days after Iraqi police or coalition forces released him. The family has blamed the government for keeping him in custody for too long while anti-American violence escalated in Iraq.

Shortly before Berg's disappearance, he was warned by the FBI that Iraq was too volatile a place for unprotected American civilians and that he could be harmed, a senior FBI official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Wednesday.

Officials said the U.S. government warned Berg to leave Iraq, and offered him a flight out of the country, a month before his grisly death.

The Bergs said they want to know if the government had received an offer to trade Iraqi prisoners for Nicholas Berg. On the videotape of his death, Berg's killers made a reference to a trade offer, but U.S. officials have said they knew of no such offer.

Michael Berg said he wanted to hear President Bush address the issue.

"I would like to ask him if it is true that al Qaeda offered to trade my son's life for the life of another person," Michael Berg said. "And if that is true, well, I need that information. … and I think the people of the United States of America need to know what the fate of their sons and daughters might be in the hands of the Bush administration."

The video in which Berg is killed was titled: "Sheikh Abu Musab al-Zarqawi slaughters an American infidel with his own hands."

The U.S. military has already posted a $10 million reward for Zarqawi for having orchestrated some of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Iraq.

Al-Zarqawi is thought to be in Iraq, operating his own terrorist network, known simply as the "Zarqawi network."

Audio Discrepancies Suggest Berg Video Doctored

I’d like to take this time to extend my deepest sympathies to Mr. and Mrs. Berg on their son Nicholas Berg’s brutal murder by the cruel and cold blooded ‘Forces of Evil.’

The video of Nicholas Berg that is circulating on the Internet is 100% doctored. One of the problems I found is as follows:

The beginning of the footage where Nicholas introduces himself, the sound was recorded using camcorders built-in microphone. One can tell it simply by paying attention to the background noise. When the scene changes where Nicholas is sitting on the floor, and other men standing behind him, it is evident that the camcorder was at least 10-12 feet away from the subjects.

The audio quality of the video is very clear. No wires can be seen in the video indicating that an external or a wireless microphone was used for audio either. From a distance of 10 feet, audio reception would not be that clear if the built-in microphone of the camcorder was used. This would produce echo and some background noise.

Definitely, audio track was added later on with the help of a simple non-linear video editing software. For doing this type of work, help of a semi-professional video editor is absolutely necessary.

As someone who makes a living off of Audio/Video work, and having seen the "uncut" version, the Berg video was produced by the same team that brought us the "Big Nose Bin Laden" video.

This is why we never use on camera microphones. Background noise from a omni-directional, low quality mic would not pick up low frequency sounds, and emphasize room noise and voice frequencies. The audio was obviously dubbed in later, and this CIA/Mossad team doing the production needs some pointers. I have seen 15 year olds with iMac, Adobe After Effects, Final Cut Pro, and Bias Peak do a better job than that.

The cuts were done on a Digital Non-Linear system. since there is no tell-tale analog edits.

The lack of blood is the sure sign it was done out of sequence. I have read some of the FreeRepublic comments on the execution. As usual, besides all the "Support the Government", "Tin-Foil Hats", and "Traitors" is some ridiculous analysis, They say:

1) There are millions of chairs like that white one around the world.

2) Al-Qaeda used their own orange jump suit

3) They beheaded him prior, and let the blood dry up from his head, so none was seen dripping.

The Freepers also think we should step up the torture, rape, and murder of Iraqis, innocent or otherwise.

Michael Berg lashed out at President George W. Bush and his administration during his first public comments since his son, Nick Berg, was murdered by al-Qaida terrorists.

"Nicholas Berg died for the sins of George Bush and Donald Rumsfeld," Michael Berg said. "The al-Qaida people are probably just as bad as they are, but this administration did this."

The 20-minute, impromptu briefing took place outside the family’s home on the 1200 block of Estate Drive, West Whiteland, on Thursday morning.

"This is an administration that allows something that they arrogantly called the Patriot Act to strip away America, to make America not the America that I grew up in," Berg continued. "It was a coup d’etat. At first a bloodless coup d’etat, but unfortunately afterward it has become very bloody."

On the front lawn of the Bergs’ home was a blue sign with that read:War is not the answer.

Michael Berg said he posted the sign there. It belonged to an organization called ANSWER, which is an acronym for Act Now to Stop the War and End Racism.

Berg has been a member of the group, he said, since participating in a rally in Washington, D.C., in March 2003.

"It is something that I am not ashamed of. I am proud of it."

He continued, "I think stopping the war and ending racism are extremely important things that this world has to do right now. I am proud to be a member of ANSWER and I plan to be at the march on June 5.

"I know it is considered a radical group," Berg said. "but I want to ask: Radical as compared to what? The Bush administration? I’ll be radical."

Berg also directed a question to the president.

"I would like to ask George Bush a question. I would like to ask him if it is true that al-Qaida offered to trade my son’s life for the life of another person," Berg said.

"And if that is true. I need that information ... and I think the rest of the people of the United States of America need to know what the fate of their sons and daughters might be in the hands of the Bush administration," he said.

Nick Berg, 26, was killed by terrorists associated with al-Qaida. A video of the execution was broadcast on a Islamic militant Web site shortly afterward. Other reports state his body was found hanging from a bridge outside Baghdad.

U.S. intelligence officials have confirmed that terrorist leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was the person shown on a video beheading Nick Berg, according to the Associated Press. Officials analyzed the voice on the video, a CIA official said Thursday.

Berg had traveled to Iraq alone earlier this year seeking work for his company, Prometheus Methods Tower Services, which specializes in building communications towers.

The family has scheduled a memorial service today at Congregation Kesher Israel, 1000 Pottstown Pike, in West Goshen. It is for family and friends only.

Michael Berg also told reporters he could prove his son was in U.S. custody during his 13 days of detention in Iraq.

I have a written statement from the state department in Baghdad ... I have it as an e-mail," Berg said. "I think an e-mail is pretty good proof because it has all the dates and whatnot on it, saying that my son was being held by military."

He did confirm that Iraqi police arrested Nick Berg on March 24. At the time, Michael Berg said his son had been traveling in a taxi cab in Mosul late at night.

Berg since has blamed the United States for not taking control of his son and ensuring he boarded his scheduled March 30 flight home on Royal Jordanian Airlines.

"Let me ask you this: Does Washington think the American public is so stupid as to believe that the Iraqi police tell the FBI what to do? I don’t think so," Berg said. "I don’t think we’re that stupid, I really don’t."

The Associated Press reported Berg produced the e-mail correspondences he had with Beth A. Payne, of the U.S. consular office in Iraq, stating that Nick Berg was in U.S. custody

A State Department spokeswoman said Thursday night, according to the Associated Press, that the diplomat in Baghdad had been given erroneous information by the U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority when she e-mailed the Berg family.

U.S. Rep. Jim Gerlach, R-6th, of Upper Uwchlan, provided Berg and the Daily Local News with a copy of a letter he sent to Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and the directors of the FBI and CIA on Wednesday.

It asked for specific information about Nick Berg’s detention in Iraq, including when he had been released and his interaction with government officials.

"We have not yet gotten any calls back by the agencies," Gerlach said on Wednesday.

The FBI had provided him with a press release containing widely reported information about Nick Berg’s whereabouts on various dates.

The congressman said it is premature to call for a federal investigation and that he would give the various agencies time to collect all the information.

He did not defend Bush against Berg’s criticisms.

"Whatever conclusions people want to draw is up to them," Gerlach said. "It is my responsibility to try to help them get answers to their very legitimate questions. Otherwise he certainly has every right to express his opinion on this matter."

Berg also used took time Thursday to shine more light on the personality of his son.

He said Nick Berg did not drink, use drugs or gamble.

"He didn’t have any bad habits," Michael Berg said. "His only addiction was high places. He liked to climb."

Nick Berg learned to work on communication towers -- often as tall as 1,700 feet -- while employed at a Texas company. That is also where he developed his affection for President Bush, who was then the governor of Texas at the time.

"He came home saying nothing but positive things about George Bush," Michael Berg said. "and to the day that he left (for Iraq) he said nothing but positive things about him. And I’m sure to the moment he died he felt nothing but positive things about him."

Michael Berg added, "On this we disagreed vehemently."

Hour Radio Show. Apparently, "Big Brother";
had been listening to the show and didn't like

Despite knowing the website addresses, and potentially the addresses of their respective publishers, the CIA, the FBI, and the Department of Homeland Security did not make any apparent efforts to monitor the websites for uploaded files or internet traffic. Therefore, no arrests were made.

How is it possible for the FBI to pinpoint with astonishing accuracy the location of a twelve-year-old child that downloads a music file from the internet, but hasn’t been able to catch the ‘terrorists’ that upload video files –containing criminal evidence- on the internet?

Now don't get me wrong, I don't think we (as in the US as it exists) are truly any better. Although, what I see in this post is the opposite bias that I see on CNN. I sense a lack of true objectivity and compassion on both sides. But who the fu©k am I anyway, right. LOL.

I think it's ludicrous what the 'white trash' did to the POW's. At the same time, I think it's heinous what the Iraq militia did to berg. I would rather be breathing and have been sodomized anyday, than to have my body shipped backed to my mom w/o it's head.

Ive heard MANY stories that a LOT of Iraqis are in those prisons for AS LITTLE as not haaving their paperwork in order at CHECKPOINTS or simply LOOTING to feed their families...GRANTED there ARE some "Murderers" there most likely...I STILL believe that US troops should abide by the Geneva Convention IMHO.The North Vietnamese might have tortured and got away with it..but that is NOT the American way as far as i'm concerned.

That's NOT what I was taught in boot camp...or "A" school for THAT matter.

Los Angeles, Alta California - May 19, 2004 - (ACN) With the overwhelming evidence that has now accumulated proving that the Nicholas Berg decapitation video is a fraud, it is time to call for an international inquiry into the crime. Besides the evidence that the video was actually filmed at the Abu Ghraib prison as outlined in a prior article titled, "Berg decapitation video was filmed inside the Abu Ghraib prison", La Voz de Aztlan has, in addition, completed a sound analysis and isolated about 10 seconds of the sound track at the end of the video. A western voice saying "How will it be done?" can be clearly heard. It looks like the "editors" in their haste to complete the bogus video for propaganda purposes have left a lot of evidence behind. The voice left inadvertently in the video can be heard on this web page. The short wave file can be repeated by refreshing the web page.

The principal purpose of the fraudulent video was to defray world attention from the heinous sexual abuses and torture of Iraqi POW's and rape of Iraqi women detainees at the same prison where the Berg decapitation video was filmed. A secondary purpose was to "frame" Al queda and especially one of their leaders by the name of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. It is not known whether the producers of the video actually beheaded Nicholas Berg or just performed some shoddy film trickery. It is possible that they worked with an already dead corpse of Nicholas Berg.

It is a total shame that the mainstream media is not bringing this information to the attention of the public. It appears that the US news media is comprised of gutless pseudo-journalists who sell their services only to globalists, Zionists, corporations and the military-industrial complex. Are they restrained or do they not care about the common citizens any more?

Where do the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, The World Court, and Christian Institutions stand on this case? The evidence is there. It is not hidden, thanks to the mistakes made by the perpetrators. Where does the United States Congress stand on this fraud? Why are they allowing the Bush Administration and their Zionist cohorts to get away with it? US Senators and Congresspersons can't be that empty-headed! Or can they?
